Description
Kaoru Tsunashi, born Kaoru Samura, is one half of the married couple at the center of the story. At 25 years old, she is a dedicated office worker who is passionate about her job and takes her professional responsibilities seriously, so much so that her husband sometimes affectionately calls her a work addict. Her initial appearance shows her with dark blue or black hair, but after her marriage to Hajime, she dyes it a pale blonde, a change that marks a new phase in her life. She is notably self-conscious about her narrow eyes, though her husband has stated he finds this feature particularly lovable.
Her personality is defined by a contrast between her grounded, professional exterior and her chaotic personal quirks. Kaoru is kind, non-judgmental, and possesses a high tolerance for the eccentric subculture hobbies of her husband, despite understanding very little about them herself. This patience is the bedrock of their unusual marriage. However, she is also a smoker who is not skilled at cooking, and her most famous trait is her relationship with alcohol. While she can drink a great deal, reaching a state of intoxication causes her to become wild, uninhibited, and prone to causing trouble, with no memory of her actions the following day. In these moments, her husband is often left to manage the consequences.
In the narrative, Kaoru serves as the primary point of view, a relatable character whose normalcy is constantly juxtaposed with the otaku culture that surrounds her. Her primary motivation is to balance her love for her career with her commitment to her family. A significant turning point in her development is her pregnancy, which becomes a central focus, leading her to reflect on her relationship and forcing both her and Hajime to prepare for parenthood. Throughout this period, she struggles with practical challenges like quitting smoking and the anxiety of reducing her workload, while also finding reassurance in her husband's support. Her role evolves from a newlywed navigating a quirky living situation to a mother facing the future with her family.
Her key relationship is, of course, with her husband Hajime Tsunashi. Despite his near shut-in lifestyle and constant anime references that fly over her head, Kaoru forms a strong, loving bond with him built on mutual tolerance and care. She also interacts with his eccentric younger brother, Mayotama, whose odd personality she tolerates with the same patient grace she shows her husband. Beyond her family, she is connected to a wider universe of the author's works, appearing as a junior colleague to a character named Akiko Toshiura in another series.
Notable abilities of Kaoru are rooted in her mundane yet essential skills. She excels in her office job, demonstrating strong dedication and competence that make her a trusted employee. Though it is a skill that has diminished with time and work, she is also a surprisingly skilled bowler who once owned her own bowling ball. While she has no remarkable talents in the subculture and gaming world, she is occasionally willing to participate in her husband's hobbies, simply for the joy of sharing time with him.
