Description
Fujikido Kenji is the central figure of the narrative, a man whose life was fractured by tragedy and reforged into a weapon of vengeance. He was originally an ordinary, hardworking salaryman in the dystopian cyberpunk city of Neo-Saitama. A devoted family man, he lived a modest and sincere life with his beloved wife, Fuyuko, and their young son, Tochinoki. This peaceful existence was shattered on Christmas Eve during a violent turf war between rival ninja clans at the Marunouchi Sugoitakai Building. The conflict claimed the lives of his wife and son, and left Kenji himself mortally wounded. On the brink of death, a mysterious and ancient entity known as the Naraku Ninja, who harbors a profound hatred for all ninja, possessed his body. This unholy union of a grieving man’s lust for revenge and an ancient spirit’s genocidal rage gave birth to a terrifying new entity: Ninja Slayer, the ninja who kills ninja.

The personality of Fujikido Kenji is a complex duality, a constant war between his remaining humanity and the consuming darkness within. As Ninja Slayer, he is a grim and merciless reaper, feared by his enemies as the Shinigami of Neo-Saitama and the Bane of Soukaiya. He shows no mercy to evil ninja, regardless of their age or gender, and is known to use brutal torture, euphemistically termed an interview, to extract information from his foes. His fighting style is characterized by a cold, pragmatic ferocity, punctuated by the ancient kiai shouts of Wasshoi upon entry and the pronouncement Ninja, kill su beshi before delivering a finishing blow. However, this cruelty is exclusively reserved for those he deems evil. He actively works to suppress the Naraku Ninja’s influence, which constantly whispers for him to slaughter indiscriminately, including innocent civilians and even non-hostile ninjas. Fujikido’s own moral compass remains intact; he is kind to the virtuous and protects the weak, drawing a clear line between his mission and senseless violence. He is stoic, taciturn, and intensely focused, yet possesses a strange, often unintentional, surrealism that occasionally manifests in his choice of dramatic entrances, a trait fans have dubbed Deochi Jutsu. He is fully aware that his quest for revenge is, at its core, a selfish act of a madman, and he holds no illusions of being a heroic savior, which adds a layer of profound tragic depth to his character.

Fujikido’s primary motivation is straightforward and all-consuming: revenge. He seeks to annihilate the Soukaiya Syndicate, the ninja organization responsible for the conflict that killed his family, and to personally destroy Darkninja, the specific ninja who murdered his wife and son with his own hands. This goal drives every action he takes. His role in the story is that of a dark avenger and an agent of brutal karma. He is a lone force of nature who systematically dismantles powerful ninja clans and corrupt mega-corporations, such as the pharmaceutical giant Yoroshi Sang, that profit from the chaos. While he is the protagonist, his journey is less about saving the world and more about purging it of a specific, monstrous evil, with the salvation of others being a byproduct of his own bloody crusade.

His key relationships are few but profound, each shaping his brutal path. The most critical is his parasitic symbiosis with the Naraku Ninja, the ancient and malevolent ninja soul inside him. Naraku is cunning and powerful, offering immense strength and vital information in exchange for control, a temptation Fujikido constantly resists. The second pivotal relationship is with Dragon Gendoso, a master of the ancient assassination art of Chadō and one of the last real ninjas. Gendoso became Fujikido’s sensei, teaching him to suppress Naraku through the Chadō breathing technique and imparting crucial instructions that became the foundation of his fighting philosophy, such as the principle of throwing a thousand shuriken if a hundred will not suffice. Gendoso’s eventual death at the hands of Darkninja further fuels Fujikido’s hatred and sense of responsibility. He also allies with Nancy Lee, a freelance journalist and skilled hacker who, despite being a mortal (a non-ninja), provides invaluable support and becomes one of the few people to know his true name. Other figures include Dragon Yukano, Gendoso’s granddaughter whom he feels honor-bound to protect, and his old nemesis Laomoto Khan, the leader of the Soukaiya Syndicate.

Kenji Fujikido undergoes significant development throughout the narrative. Initially, after being possessed, he was completely subjugated by Naraku during a period known as the Seven Days of Darkness, where he slaughtered anyone, good or evil, who crossed his path. His training with Dragon Gendoso marked the first step in regaining his autonomy, allowing him to fight as Fujikido Kenji, not just as a vessel for Naraku. As the story progresses, he learns to negotiate with the vengeful spirit inside him, forging a more symbiotic relationship where he can consciously draw upon Naraku’s power, such as summoning the destructive Red-Black Flames, without losing his sense of self. After achieving his primary revenge against the Soukaiya and the Shadow Guild, he loses his immediate purpose and experiences a period of aimless wandering. However, he eventually finds a new path, operating as a hard-boiled private detective under the alias Ichiro Morita, continuing to investigate and eliminate ninja-related threats. In the final act of his journey as Ninja Slayer, he manages to achieve a complete separation from Naraku. Though this costs him the extraordinary power of his ninja soul, he continues his mission as a real ninja, adopting a new identity as Satsubatsu Knight, proving that his will to fight is no longer dependent on the dark spirit that once empowered him.

Despite lacking unique jutsus—esoteric supernatural techniques—that many of his enemies possess, Ninja Slayer is one of the most formidable fighters in his world, embodying the series’ core principle of No Karate, No Ninja. His abilities are rooted in overwhelming physical prowess and ancient martial arts. He employs a devastating form of Karate that incorporates powerful kicks, punches, and the iconic chop, a single strike capable of decapitating lesser ninjas. He is also a master of Jū-jutsu, utilizing lethal grappling techniques like the Alabama Otoshi, a piledriver move dropped from a lethal height. His most significant technique is Chadō, the Way of Tea, an ancient assassination art taught to him by Dragon Gendoso. This esoteric discipline allows him to perform Chadō breathing for rapid mental focus and physical healing, as well as unleash powerful techniques like the Dragon’s Whirlwind Kick. His most distinctive power is derived from his resonance with the Naraku Ninja. When he synchronizes his anger and intent with Naraku’s, he can manifest Annihilation, a fearsome ability that generates billowing, corrosive black flames capable of incinerating enemies and even repairing his own ninja armor. Finally, he is a master of psychological warfare, using potent verbal taunts and theatrical, often bizarre, entrances to unnerve and distract his opponents before striking.
