Description
Dark Ninja is a prominent antagonist from the anime and is the primary rival of the protagonist, Ninja Slayer. His real name is Fujio Katakara. He is the ninja who personally killed the wife and child of Kenji Fujikido, the man who would become Ninja Slayer, during the Marunouchi uprising, an event that serves as the foundation for the protagonist's quest for vengeance.

Before becoming a ninja, Fujio Katakara lived a deeply unhappy and difficult life. Born into a poor family, he was afflicted by an ancient curse passed down through his bloodline, which manifested as a demonic mark on his body. To pay off debts, his parents sold him to an illegal facility in the red-light district of Neo-Kabukicho. After escaping and growing up in an orphanage, he became an archaeology student, driven by a desire to understand the origin of the curse that had plagued his family for generations. This quest eventually led him to Egypt, where, instead of finding a cure, he discovered a legendary and cursed katana named Beppin. Upon touching the sword, he was possessed by the soul of a mythical arch-ninja called Hagane Ninja, transforming him into Dark Ninja and simultaneously breaking the curse.

In stark contrast to Ninja Slayer, who fights with bare-handed karate, Dark Ninja is a master of iaido, the art of drawing the katana to attack instantly. His primary weapon is the cursed blade Beppin, a name which ironically translates to 'pretty girl'. His fighting style is precise, ruthless, and machine-like. Dark Ninja's signature technique is the Death Slash, a devastating iaido strike, and his ultimate assassination technique is named Kiri-sute gomen, an ancient samurai concept granting the right to strike at those who offend one's honor. His physical appearance is defined by his obsidian-black ninja armor and a full-face helmet that conceals his features, making him resemble a suit of armor more than a traditional ninja. After an early defeat, his helmet is destroyed, and he is subsequently seen wearing only his face mask.

Throughout the story, Dark Ninja is characterized by his cold, taciturn, and seemingly emotionless demeanor. He performs his duties as a ninja with mechanical efficiency, showing no hesitation in killing anyone, including innocent civilians. This behavior makes him appear as a pure killing machine. However, this icy exterior conceals a deep-seated and powerful fighting spirit, a volatile pride, and a fierce internal rage towards the unfair destiny forced upon him. Unlike Ninja Slayer, who fights for revenge and justice, Dark Ninja is driven by a desire to defy his tragic fate and accumulate power to ensure he will never again be vulnerable and discarded as he was in his youth. Despite his villainous nature, traces of his humanity remain, as he has been known to risk himself to save a friend from his childhood.

Dark Ninja initially serves as the most powerful and loyal right-hand to Raomoto Khan, the leader of the criminal ninja syndicate Soukaiya. His loyalty is not born of sentiment but of utility, and he feels no remorse in betraying his master or killing former allies when it suits his goals. After being defeated by Ninja Slayer and being saved from the brink of death by a mysterious being named Master Tortoise, he abandons Soukaiya and defects to their rival organization, the Zaibatsu Shadow Guild, to further search for information about his cursed sword and his destiny.

His development throughout the series is driven by his desire to uncover the secrets of Beppin and his connection to Hagane Ninja. After being told by Master Tortoise to seek out a legendary blacksmith named Thunderforge to repair his broken sword, his quest forges a new path independent of the ninja syndicates he previously served. When he learns that the curse on his family ultimately originated from Thunderforge, his normally cool facade breaks in a rare moment of furious rage. This journey transforms Dark Ninja from a simple enforcer into a character who actively seeks to understand and defy his own pre-written fate.
