Description
Kagura, also known as Kagura Ton in the 2015 anime series, is a fourteen-year-old girl who stands 155 centimeters tall and was born on November 3. She is a member of the extraterrestrial Yato clan, a race known throughout the galaxy for its monstrous physical strength and ferocious bloodlust. Despite being one of the most powerful beings on Earth, Kagura actively fights against the violent instincts that run through her veins, wishing only to live as a normal girl.
She is the second person to join the Yorozuya odd-jobs business, living and working alongside the samurai Gintoki Sakata and the bespectacled Shinpachi Shimura. Her family history is marked by tragedy and separation. Her mother, Kouka, died when Kagura was very young, after which her father, the legendary warrior Umibouzu, left their home. Her older brother, Kamui, also departed after a violent confrontation with their father, leaving Kagura alone on her home planet. Driven to earn money for her family, she left her home world and traveled across the universe, eventually arriving on Earth. She initially found work with a gang but fled when ordered to kill someone. Shortly after, she was accidentally run over by Gintoki's motor scooter, and after the Yorozuya helped her leave the gang, she intimidated Gintoki into hiring her, moving into the office where she sleeps in a closet.
Kagura has a boyish and impulsive personality, often speaking in a frank, vulgar manner regardless of the person she is addressing. She has a peculiar and often distorted way of viewing the world, which frequently leads to misunderstandings that Gintoki and Shinpachi struggle to comprehend. She is highly impressionable and naive, easily manipulated by others and quick to copy the bad habits of those around her, particularly Gintoki, from whom she has adopted habits like picking her nose. Despite claiming to dislike violence, she prefers not to overthink problems and often defaults to solving them with her fists. Kagura possesses an insatiable appetite, with a particular fondness for rice and the dried seaweed snack sukonbu.
Her primary motivation is to protect those who have become important to her, rejecting the legacy of violence that defines her clan. She finds a surrogate family in the Yorozuya. Her relationship with Gintoki is central to her development; she looks up to him, calling him Gin-chan, and he serves as a paternal figure and mentor, even as he fills her head with nonsense that she readily believes. She has a teasing, sibling-like dynamic with Shinpachi, often mocking and abusing him, yet she is willing to unleash her full power when he is in genuine danger. She greatly admires Shinpachi's sister, Otae, whom she calls Boss. She also has a famous, ongoing rivalry with Sougo Okita, the sadistic captain of the Shinsengumi. He nicknames her China Girl due to her Chinese-style dress, and they constantly bicker and fight, though they have been known to form a devastatingly effective team when they fight together.
Over the course of the series, Kagura gradually matures, growing more attached to the people of Earth and becoming more willing to protect them. She struggles with her identity as a Yato and fears the moment she loses control, known as her awakening, where her killer instincts take over and she becomes a mindless monster of immense power. This occurred once when Shinpachi was brutally injured, allowing her to overwhelm a powerful adult Yato, an event she refuses to repeat for fear of losing herself entirely.
As a member of the Yato clan, Kagura possesses superhuman physical abilities, including immense strength that allows her to stop a speeding scooter with one hand, remarkable speed, and extraordinary flexibility that enables her to perform acrobatic feats and even catch multiple bullets with her teeth and fingers. She also has a highly accelerated healing factor, allowing her to recover from serious wounds, such as gunshots, overnight. Her Yato heritage also gives her skin a high sensitivity to sunlight, forcing her to carry her signature purple parasol whenever she is outdoors. This parasol is not just for protection; it is also the Yato clan's weapon of choice, functioning as a bulletproof shield and a machine gun that can fire projectiles from its tip. By the time of the two-year time skip, she has also demonstrated the ability to change her apparent age at will, appearing as a younger girl or an elderly woman.
