OVA
Description
Kenta Maezono is a student at Seidou High School and a key member of its baseball team, where he primarily plays first base and is a right-handed batter and thrower. Hailing from Osaka Prefecture, he speaks with a Kansai dialect and is in the same year as classmates like Miyuki Kazuya and Kuramochi Youichi, advancing from his second year to his third year over the course of the story.
With a tall and solid build standing at 180 centimeters and weighing 75 kilograms, Maezono has a fierce and often intimidating facial expression. Despite this intimidating exterior, he has a kind and considerate personality, always looking out for his teammates, especially the underclassmen. Known as one of the most vocal members of the team, he does not hesitate to speak his mind, even when it means confronting the captain, Miyuki Kazuya. He is deeply respected by his peers for his strong work ethic; he is recognized as one of the hardest-working players on the team, constantly practicing his swing and often being the last to leave the field. This effort is acknowledged by everyone and fuels his respect for fellow hard worker, Sawamura Eijun. After spending considerable time as a reserve player in the second string, he deeply understands the frustrations of those who are not in the starting lineup, a perspective that shapes his supportive yet determined nature.
His primary motivation is to cement his place as a starting player and a cornerstone of Seidou's batting lineup after the retirement of the powerful third-year seniors. He is determined to lead the new team and prove his worth, a drive that intensifies after being unable to participate in the summer tournament final. His role in the story evolves significantly as he transitions from a lesser-known second-string player to a crucial member of the first string. Following the summer tournament, he is appointed as the team's vice-captain and becomes the everyday first baseman, initially batting third in the lineup. He struggles with the pressure early on but grows into a reliable clean-up hitter, anchoring the order as the fifth batter. His strong sense of responsibility as vice-captain sometimes clashes with Miyuki's more detached leadership style, leading to conflicts where Maezono argues that the captain should be more emotionally connected to the team’s struggles.
Maezono's most significant relationship is with the captain, Miyuki Kazuya. While he openly admits to Miyuki's genius and his suitability as captain, Maezono dislikes his aloof and manipulative methods, leading to a tense but respectful dynamic where they often disagree. He is also very close with his roommate, Haruichi Kominato, often acting as a mentor and practicing with him, especially after Haruichi experiences the disappointment of not playing in a crucial game. Maezono holds immense respect for his senior, Isashiki Jun, whose aggressive playing style he tries to emulate. His admiration for Sawamura Eijun is strong; he values Sawamura's relentless spirit and refusal to give up, even when overshadowed by more naturally gifted pitchers, and finds encouragement in Sawamura's performances.
Throughout the series, Maezono undergoes considerable development. Initially an untested player with raw power but significant technical flaws, he is heavily criticized by Coach Ochiai, who suggests he should be removed from the starting lineup. His main weaknesses include a proneness to swinging at breaking balls and a tendency to put too much power into his swing, preventing solid contact. He works to improve these issues through advice from Coach Kataoka and experience in live games. A turning point occurs when he hits a surprising home run in a retirement game for the third-years, which restores his confidence. He later makes critical hits in important matches, such as a two-run double against Teito High School and a game-winning hit against Yakushi High School in the fall tournament final. However, his development is not linear; during the off-season, he tries to learn a new batting style and destroys his form, resulting in him being benched for the spring Koshien tournament.
As a player, his most notable ability is his raw power, which is considered the best on the Seidou team. He is a classic pull hitter who excels at driving inside pitches with tremendous force, capable of hitting long-distance home runs when he makes solid contact. However, his contact hitting is less consistent, and he has poor plate discipline, often swinging at pitches outside the strike zone. His defensive skills and arm strength at first base are reliable, though his base running is only average.
