Description
Eijun Sawamura is the main protagonist of Ace of Diamond, a left-handed pitcher who comes from Nagano Prefecture where he played for the Akagi Middle School baseball team. Despite his below-average team that lost almost all its matches, Sawamura displayed an extremely strong spirit that inspired his teammates to continue playing their best. After being scouted by Rei Takashima, he initially planned to refuse in order to stay with his friends, but they encouraged him to pursue his potential. Sawamura ultimately enrolls at Seidou High School and boldly declares his ambition to become the team's ace.
Sawamura has a hotheaded and loudmouthed personality that often exasperates his teammates, yet his unwavering fighting spirit and enthusiasm serve to rally them during games. He acts before he thinks, frequently landing in awkward situations, but shows genuine regret afterward and demonstrates a strong willingness to learn from his mistakes. Despite his obnoxious tendencies and mediocre knowledge of baseball fundamentals, he is surprisingly level-headed in critical moments, a trait developed from his experience playing on a consistently losing team. He is never ashamed to express his emotions openly, and his teammates often draw inspiration from his strong will and determination. As he gains experience, particularly through being placed in difficult relief situations, Sawamura learns to maintain consistent focus and becomes highly capable of handling pressure.
His primary motivation is to become the ace pitcher of Seidou and lead the team to Koushien, the national high school baseball championship. The frustration of past defeats fuels his continuous growth, and he always actively seeks new ways to improve himself so that he can earn the acknowledgment of his team. He places the team's priority over his own ambitions, understanding that earning the ace number requires demonstrating his value to the squad.
Sawamura's role in the story is that of a passionate and unconventional pitcher who must develop his raw talent through rigorous training and competition. He begins as a second-string pitcher but is promoted to the varsity, eventually being entrusted with the ace number during his second year at the start of the Summer Tournament. He maintains a friendship and rivalry with Satoru Furuya, a fellow first-year pitcher who possesses incredible raw speed, and the two push each other to improve.
His key relationships are central to his development. His partnership with catcher Kazuya Miyuki begins when they temporarily form a battery during Sawamura's visit to Seidou, and Miyuki's exceptional skill becomes one of the reasons Sawamura joins the school. The most profound mentoring relationship he experiences is with Takigawa Chris Yuu, a third-year catcher sidelined by a shoulder injury. Initially clashing with Chris due to his impatience and misunderstanding of Chris's situation, Sawamura eventually learns about Chris's dedicated rehabilitation and begs for forgiveness and instruction. Chris teaches Sawamura to correct his pitching form and provides the foundation for his future growth. Sawamura also shares a close friendship with his roommates Kuramochi Youichi and Masuko Tooru, and maintains a connection with his childhood friend Wakana from Nagano.
Sawamura undergoes significant development throughout the series. He begins as an erratic pitcher who throws with natural flexibility and unconventional motions that make his pitches unpredictable but difficult for catchers to handle. Initially he struggles with poor control, weak batting, and outfield defense, but he overcomes many of these deficiencies, becoming particularly skilled at bunting and pick-offs. A key turning point occurs during the fall tournament when he develops the yips after a critical loss, a psychological condition that affects his pitching. He overcomes this period with the support of his teammates and emerges more self-aware and determined. Through training with Chris and Coach Kataoka, he refines his pitching form to hide the release point of the ball more effectively, making his timing difficult for batters to read. By his second year, he has notably enhanced his pitch velocity, improved his control, and learned to make effective contact with the ball when bunting.
Sawamura's notable abilities include his naturally flexible body with supple joints, which allows him to immediately change a pitch's direction. His signature pitching arsenal is known as the "numbers," a collection of various grips and throwing methods developed with Miyuki, combining Sawamura's unique delivery with improved control. These include pitches such as a four-seam fastball, a changeup, a cutter, a two-seam fastball, and a split-finger fastball. He is recognized as an exceptional bunter, earning him the nickname "Bunt Master," and his fearlessness on the mound ranks him highly in terms of pitching guts. Among his teammates, he is affectionately known by nicknames such as Bakamura, reflecting both his foolish antics and his endearing nature.
