TV-Series
Description
Haru Onodera is the younger sister of Kosaki Onodera and a student at Bonyari High School, entering as a freshman one year behind her sister and the main group of characters. Born on March 21, she stands 152 centimeters tall and has a blood type of A. At first glance, she strongly resembles her older sister, with long dark hair and delicate features, but she typically wears her hair in a side ponytail secured with a purple scrunchie and has a distinctive cowlick on top of her head. Her bangs are parted on the opposite side compared to Kosaki, and she is often seen in her school uniform paired with a light-yellow cardigan.
Haru has a strong-willed and serious personality that contrasts sharply with her sister's more timid nature. She is feisty, somewhat rambunctious, and can be quite stubborn in her convictions. Having attended an all-girls boarding school for middle school, she is uncomfortable around boys and tends to be distrustful of them. Despite her confident exterior, she becomes easily flustered in unusual situations and is known to be extremely sensitive to being tickled. She has a notably poor sense of direction, often getting lost and requiring help to find her way. Haru also possesses a strong belief in destiny and fate, particularly regarding her encounter with a mysterious "prince" who rescued her.
Her primary motivation throughout the story is protecting her beloved older sister Kosaki, whom she deeply admires and respects. Upon entering high school, she hears unsavory rumors about Raku Ichijo, believing him to be a womanizing gang member who is trying to take advantage of her sister despite already having a girlfriend. This misunderstanding drives her initial hostility toward Raku, and she pledges to keep him away from Kosaki at all costs. However, as she spends more time with him, she discovers that they share common interests, particularly a love for Japanese sweets, and she begins to see the kind person her sister described.
In the larger story, Haru serves as a new source of comedic misunderstandings and romantic complications. Her arrival adds fresh dynamics to the existing group, as she is one of the few characters who openly dislikes Raku rather than being infatuated with him. Her role becomes more significant when she uncovers that Raku and Chitoge Kirisaki are only pretending to be a couple, leading to a deeper understanding of the complicated situation surrounding her sister and Raku.
Haru shares an extremely close bond with her sister Kosaki, often described as having a sister complex or being a siscon due to her abnormally strong attachment and protectiveness. Her relationship with Raku is complex and evolves considerably over the course of the story. Initially viewing him as an enemy, she gradually warms to him as she realizes he is actually the prince who rescued her on her first day of school. She eventually develops romantic feelings for him but chooses to suppress them to support her sister's happiness. She is also classmates with Fuu and Paula McCoy, and she demonstrates patience and friendliness in befriending the initially unsociable Paula. Ruri Miyamoto is another friend who has known Haru since before high school.
Haru undergoes significant development throughout the series. Upon discovering that Raku was her cherished prince and that his relationship with Chitoge was fake, she is forced to confront her own feelings. Despite her growing affection for Raku, she makes the mature decision to step aside and support her sister's pursuit of love. This internal conflict and her ultimate choice demonstrate her selflessness and deep love for her family. To symbolize her decision to move forward and focus on her future, she cuts her hair short. She chooses to pursue her passion for making Japanese sweets, a skill at which she already excels, and eventually becomes the manager of the Onodera family sweet shop.
Haru possesses notable abilities, particularly in the culinary arts. Raised in a family of pastry chefs, she is an excellent cook who specializes in making traditional Japanese sweets known as wagashi. She taught her sister how to make gateau chocolat for Valentine's Day, showcasing her expertise and patience as a teacher. Her passion for Japanese confections leads her to train at a famous sweets shop, and she dedicates herself to preserving and mastering traditional Japanese style confectionery.
