Description
Asako Kusakabe is a pivotal figure in the events leading up to the story, serving as the mentor and legal guardian of the protagonist Yuuji Kazami. She is already deceased by the time the narrative begins at Mihama Academy, having passed away roughly a year before Yuuji’s transfer there. Her influence, however, permeates his every action and thought.

Standing at 174 centimeters tall with dark blue hair typically tied in a ponytail and matching blue eyes, Asako was a tall and striking woman with a pale complexion and a slender build. Her usual attire consisted of a tank top with black trousers and boots, often accompanied by a blue jacket worn over her shoulders.

Asako’s personality was a complex blend of harshness and hidden sweetness. She was a highly capable and competent agent who drilled her own pragmatic values into Yuuji, yet she was also known for her rough and eccentric demeanor. Yuuji himself once described her as having a rough personality. She was utterly incompetent in the kitchen, famously unable to prepare even a simple dish like fried rice, which stands in stark contrast to Yuuji’s own exceptional cooking skills. In her leisure time, she was content to relax with a book, a pack of cigarettes, and a pot of coffee, especially on rainy days. Her blunt and proactive nature was such that during a visit to the zoo, when a lion roared at her, she reportedly roared back with such ferocity that the animal cowered in fear.

Her motivations are deeply rooted in her own tragic past. Born in the United States, Asako was abandoned as a newborn on a church doorstep. She was later adopted by a Japanese couple, but her life took a dark turn at the age of six when she accidentally smothered her newly born adoptive brother. The incident led to her being blamed and ostracized, resulting in her return to an orphanage. There, she was labeled a murderer and became a troubled, violent child who distrusted adults. This traumatic background fostered a deep-seated desire to prevent others from suffering similar fates. It was this drive that led her to rescue Yuuji from the terrorist organization led by Heath Oslo, seeing in him a reflection of her own isolated past.

Asako’s role in the story is that of the foundational mentor and surrogate family for Yuuji. After raiding one of Oslo’s bases and discovering the traumatized young Yuuji imprisoned underground, she became his legal guardian and took him to live in her secluded cabin in the mountains of Yamanashi Prefecture. As a former agent of Ichigaya, a covert anti-terrorism organization, with the code number V-9029, she trained Yuuji in all forms of combat, survival, and sniping, shaping him into the deadly agent he would become. She was not merely a teacher; she was also his mother figure, older sister, and even his first sexual partner, initiating a physical relationship with him as part of her unconventional education and personal attachment.

Her key relationships define much of the backstory. Her bond with Yuuji is the most significant. He came to respect and love her as his god, and her teachings became the core of his psyche. To prevent him from becoming a cold-blooded killer, she instilled in him a powerful aversion to taking life. Another crucial relationship is with Yuria Harudera, also known as JB. They were childhood friends from the same orphanage, and Yuria later became Asako’s handler at Ichigaya. Their relationship was filled with bickering due to Asako’s rule-breaking nature, but they shared a deep, unshakable bond. After Asako’s death, Yuria took over as Yuuji’s guardian, still grieving the loss of her friend.

The character’s development occurs almost entirely before the main story. After rescuing Yuuji, she resigned from active duty due to a deteriorating health condition. The cause was a lingering injury from her fight with Oslo’s forces: a bullet wound that had damaged the capillaries in her right eye, leading to a condition known as Stardust Syndrome. This syndrome caused her to eventually lose her eyesight, seeing a phantom starry sky, and ultimately led to her death. In her final moments, she passed away quietly in front of Yuuji, leaving him with a legacy of skills, trauma, and a purpose.

Asako’s notable abilities were extraordinary. As the agent code-named V-9029, she was considered an ace, a sniper of remarkable skill capable of feats like a two-thousand-meter shot in foggy conditions. She was a master of fighting, planning, and covert operations. Her combat prowess was such that even after being wounded, she could cut down an opponent with her sword. She passed all of these lethal and practical skills on to Yuuji, ensuring that her legacy as one of the most formidable operatives in the Ichigaya organization lived on through him.
