Description
Eikþyrnir Surt is one of the seven God Warriors of Asgard who serve Andreas in the anime Saint Seiya: Soul of Gold. Known as the God Warrior of the constellation Eikþyrnir, his God Robe is themed after a great horned deer from北欧神话. Physically, Surt is depicted as a young man with orange hair and purple eyes, standing approximately 185 centimeters tall.
Surt hails from Asgard in Northern Europe and trained in the frigid lands of West Siberia. It was during this training period that he formed a deep childhood friendship with Aquarius Camus, as both were aspiring to become Saints of Athena. The key event that shaped Surt's life was a tragic accident during one of Camus's training exercises, which triggered an avalanche that killed Surt's younger sister, Sinmore. While Surt initially told Camus that it was merely an accident and not his fault, the trauma of his sister's death fundamentally changed him. Unable to continue on the path of a Saint, he abandoned that future and swore to reject family and companions, instead embracing a path that would grant him immense power.
His personality is defined by a cold, calculating, and strategic nature. He is a master of tactics and efficiency in battle, rivaling the legendary strategist Alberich of Asgard. Surt is also notably arrogant, often looking down on others, such as when he mocks the God Warrior Frodi for being defeated. His strategic mind is reflected in his combat style, which prioritizes setting traps and only engaging at the most opportune moment to secure victory with maximum efficiency. Before his sister's death, he was described as an honest and upright person who despised unfair tactics, making his transformation into a cunning and ruthless warrior a stark contrast to his former self.
As a God Warrior, Surt holds the position of guardian of Muspelheim, also known as the Hall of Fire, which is one of the great cores of the world tree Yggdrasil. He wields the legendary fire sword Laevateinn, which he can use to generate powerful flames. His two primary techniques are the Flame Deer Maelstrom and the Hatred Blue Flame. His flames are described as having a cold, blue quality, and with his sword, he can enhance his attack speed to lightspeed.
In the story, Surt is tasked with eliminating the resurrected Gold Saints. He first engages Scorpio Milo, quickly overpowering him and throwing him from a cliff. Later, he orders Camus to finish the job, testing the Aquarius Saint's loyalty. Surt is the guardian of Jaheim, which is revealed to be the fiery realm of Muspelheim, and it is here that he confronts Capricorn Shura and his old friend Camus. His most significant relationship is with Camus, which is built on a foundation of shared history, guilt, and vengeance. Camus, feeling responsible for the death of Surt's sister, pledged his resurrected life to assisting Surt. This creates a tense dynamic where Surt holds power over Camus through his past mistake.
Despite his cold exterior and claims of having severed all emotional ties, Surt's entire motivation is rooted in the hatred and pain stemming from his sister's death. This unresolved trauma drives his antagonistic role. His character development culminates in a battle with Camus, who has awakened his God Cloth. Upon his defeat, Surt finally reconciles with his past and with Camus, shedding tears as he lets go of the hatred that defined him. Unlike many other warriors, Surt survives the conflict and is seen in the aftermath at the Asgardian colosseum, helping to train the next generation of Asgardian warriors alongside his fellow God Warriors Frodi, Heracles, and Sigmund.
