Description
Hraesvelgr Balder is one of the seven God Warriors of Asgard who serves under Andreas, the representative of Odin, in the series Saint Seiya: Soul of Gold. He is a native of Asgard, having been born and trained in the harsh northern regions of the sanctuary.

Balder was once a kind-hearted child who lived in a poor village where all the villagers fell ill. He worked tirelessly to help the sick, often accompanied by his dog, but was devastated when his efforts proved futile and people continued to die. Blaming his own physical weakness for his inability to save others, he traveled to a temple and prayed before a statue of Odin, asking why he was given such a frail body. A mysterious god, whom Balder believed to be Odin, answered his prayer and blessed him with an invulnerable body that felt no pain or fatigue. However, in exchange for this divine gift, the god stripped away Balder's humanity, including his compassion and ability to empathize with the suffering of others.

After receiving this blessing, Balder wandered Asgard searching for a place worthy of someone he believed had been chosen by Odin. He showed no emotion even when his dog died during his journey, and he eventually found purpose in a coliseum where he became a ruthless fighter. Over the years, he killed countless opponents and earned the reputation as the best warrior of Asgard. His belief that he had become a god among men grew stronger as he received praise from the people, leading him to develop an extreme god complex. When Andreas was named Odin's new representative, Balder was promoted to the rank of God Warrior, fully convinced that the battlefield was where he would use the divine power bestowed upon him.

As a God Warrior, Balder presents himself as a calm, serious, and intelligent individual. His knowledge is so respected that even Andreas consults him in difficult situations. He is incredibly confident in his status and his invulnerability, never attacking first in battle but calmly waiting to confirm that his opponent cannot harm him before killing them without mercy. Despite considering himself a divine being, he maintains strong loyalty toward Odin and Andreas as his representative. However, his serene demeanor shatters when his divine nature is questioned or insulted, and he can become enraged and berserk, as seen during his confrontation with the Gold Saint Virgo Shaka.

Balder is assigned to protect Alfheim, the chamber of light within the great tree Yggdrasill. There, he confronts Shaka and demonstrates his incredible power, easily nullifying the Gold Saint's techniques. He explains his history and his belief that Odin granted him invulnerability, declaring himself a god. Shaka, however, reveals that it was not Odin who blessed Balder but a malevolent presence named Loki, who had revived on Earth. Shaka further explains that Balder lacks something essential for one with divine qualities: his heart and compassion were taken from him in exchange for his immortal body. As Balder loses his composure and attacks furiously, Shaka unleashes his ultimate technique, Tenbu Horin, which destroys the divine blessing on Balder's body. Once the blessing is removed, Balder immediately suffers all the damage and pain he should have accumulated over the years and begins to die. In his final moments, he asks Shaka what he lost, and upon hearing the answer, weeps and calls himself a fool, showing genuine regret for his actions. He dies peacefully in Shaka's arms.

Balder is widely considered the most powerful of the seven new God Warriors, possessing combat ability, Cosmo, strength, and speed comparable to a Gold Saint. His most notable ability is the invulnerability granted by the runes given to him by Loki. He possesses two runes, Yr on his left hand and Ansuz on his right hand. Yr allows him to manipulate reality, creating a separate dimension where he summons four Valkyries to attack his opponent. Ansuz allows him to discharge his Cosmo through his sword, Tyrfing, releasing a powerful energy beam capable of destroying barriers. He wields the cursed sword Tyrfing as his primary weapon, which channels his abilities. Balder also demonstrates strong psychic powers, including telepathy and the ability to create illusions, and can move between dimensions or escape dimensional traps. His invulnerability makes him immune to physical damage, fatigue, pain, and even attacks that directly target the soul, such as Shaka's Riku Do Rin Ne. Ultimately, only the full power of Shaka's Tenbu Horin was able to overcome this blessing and destroy it completely.
