ONA
Description
Andreas Riise is a central antagonist in the anime Saint Seiya: Soul of Gold. He is introduced as the new ruler of Asgard, having taken the position of God Odin's earthly representative after the previous holder, Hilda of Polaris, falls mysteriously ill. Prior to his rise to power, Andreas was a physician at the Valhalla Palace, a background that explains his knowledge of the human body and his ability to move within the highest circles of the realm. In this earlier role, he once showed compassion by visiting and aiding the imprisoned warrior Sigmund, an act that contrasts sharply with his later ruthless behavior. Physically, he stands at 188 centimeters tall, with a presence that initially matches his noble station.

On the surface, Andreas presents himself as a benevolent and gentle leader. He speaks to the people of Asgard with kindness and has promised them a new era of prosperity, claiming that the forbidden great tree Yggdrasil will bear fruit and bring sunlight and warmth to their eternally frozen land. The citizens, unaware of his true intentions, genuinely believe him to be a good man working for their salvation. However, this benevolent persona is a complete fabrication. In reality, Andreas is a master manipulator who uses honeyed words to deceive the population while pursuing a dark ambition. He is the one who revived Yggdrasil, a tree long considered a taboo in Asgard, and his goal is to gather the power of the Gold Saints who have mysteriously returned to life. The ultimate purpose of his scheme is to harvest the cosmos of the Gold Saints and the power of the land itself to mature an evil fruit within Yggdrasil, which will grant him the legendary spear, Gungnir, and with it, the power to rule the world.

His role in the story is that of the primary human adversary and a puppet master. He commands the new generation of seven God Warriors, bestowing upon them enhanced Odin Sapphires that not only increase their power but also allow him to control their minds, turning them into mindless Berserkers when it suits him. He is also directly responsible for the situation the Gold Saints find themselves in, having orchestrated their resurrection to serve as a power source for his plan. Andreas engages in direct combat on several notable occasions. In a flashback, he fights the Gold Saint Aiolos, who sees through his plot. During this intense battle, Andreas is shot in the left eye by one of Aiolos's golden arrows, an injury that leaves a lasting mark and continues to hamper his power. In the present, he personally overpowers and captures Aphrodite of Pisces and proves more than a match for a powerless Deathmask, though he is forced to retreat when Deathmask briefly awakens the God Cloth.

Key relationships define his role in the narrative. His most significant and hidden connection is with the Norse god of mischief, Loki. The charismatic and scheming Andreas is not merely a villain but a puppet, having been possessed by the spirit of Loki who was sealed in an urn long ago. The god took over Andreas's body when he was a child, waiting for the right moment to achieve his full resurrection. Thus, Andreas's ambition and cunning are a reflection of Loki's own nature, making him the god's vessel and pawn. He has a contentious relationship with the Gold Saints, whom he seeks to use as fuel for his plan, viewing them as little more than tools. His most notable adversary is Aiolos, whose arrow not only wounded him but also continues to suppress his powers during his final battle. He also interacts with the priestess Lyfia, whom he manipulates and ultimately orders to be killed when she becomes a liability.

Andreas's character development is less about personal growth and more about the gradual shedding of his false facade and the final, complete subjugation of his will by the god he hosts. Throughout the series, he remains a calm and calculating observer, watching the Gold Saints battle his God Warriors from a distance like pieces on a chessboard. As the Gold Saints succeed in destroying the seven statues that form Yggdrasil's core, his composure cracks, revealing the desperation beneath his placid exterior. In the final confrontation, he fights the Gold Saints Aiolia, Mu, Saga, and Dohko. He initially struggles due to the power of the golden arrow still lodged in his eye, but as he is pushed to his limit, Loki takes full control of his body. The human, Andreas Riise, effectively ceases to exist at this point, becoming nothing more than a vessel for the god. His body is ultimately destroyed by the forbidden technique Athena Exclamation, but the tragedy of his character is that his death serves only as a temporary setback for Loki, who had already prepared a new body for himself.

In terms of abilities, Andreas is a formidable fighter even without the full power of the god possessing him. He wields a mysterious and potent form of phytokinesis, allowing him to manipulate the enormous roots and vines of Yggdrasil at will, using them for both offense and defense. He can also fire powerful blasts of concentrated cosmos energy. His true power, however, is his cunning intelligence and his ability to orchestrate complex plans that manipulate gods, saints, and mortals alike. As the story progresses and Loki's influence grows, his power escalates dramatically, though it is always overshadowed by the god he unknowingly serves.
