Description
Hiroshi Ono is a supporting character in Ace of Diamond: Second Season, where he appears as a third-year student at Seidou High School and a member of the baseball team's first string. He wears the jersey number 12 and primarily serves as a catcher. Ono is part of the same generation as the team's star catcher, Miyuki Kazuya, which initially placed him further down the depth chart. He spent the summer tournament of his second year on the second string, unable to break into the lineup behind both Miyuki and the older Miyauchi.
Personality-wise, Ono is defined by his considerate and thoughtful nature. He is consistently portrayed as a caring teammate who is highly aware of the feelings and mental states of those around him, particularly the pitchers he works with. Despite his gentle demeanor, he is not afraid to be strict when he sees potential in a player, and he readily offers advice to his fellow teammates. This combination of empathy and directness makes him a reliable and knowledgeable presence on the squad.
His primary motivation is to contribute to the team's success and to support the pitchers to the best of his ability. Understanding the immense physical and mental burden placed on a pitcher's arm, Ono prefers a cautious and safe approach to calling a game. He focuses on helping pitchers improve their control rather than putting extra pressure on them to throw risky or overpowering pitches. This fundamental philosophy guides all his actions behind the plate.
Ono's role in the story becomes most prominent during a period of crisis for Seidou. When starting catcher Miyuki suffers a significant injury during the Jingu Tournament, Ono is thrust into the starting lineup as the team's primary catcher during Miyuki's three-week rehabilitation. This is his major opportunity to prove his value at the highest level of competition. He has key relationships with the team's pitchers, having trained extensively with both Sawamura Eijun and Furuya Satoru, especially after the retirement of the former catcher Chris. Ono is also roommates with the hard-throwing pitcher Furuya Satoru, creating a close living and working dynamic with one of the team's aces.
Throughout the series, Ono demonstrates significant development. Initially an understudy who struggled to catch the unique pitches of Sawamura and Furuya, he worked diligently to become well-versed in every pitcher's distinct style. Through persistent training alongside his fellow reserve catcher Kariba Wataru, Ono earns the trust of both his coach, Kataoka, and Miyuki, who consider him capable of handling the entire pitching staff as the reliable backup, or back stopper.
In terms of notable abilities, Ono is a fundamentally sound catcher with a strong understanding of baseball strategy. His defining skill is his meticulous consideration for his pitchers, which translates into excellent game-calling focused on safety and control. He is also proficient in the defensive aspects of catching, such as guarding against base runners to prevent steals. While he may not possess the overwhelming offensive power or the exceptional throwing arm of a player like Miyuki, his reliability, knowledge, and careful, supportive approach make him an invaluable asset to the Seidou pitching staff when his number is called.
