Description
Duero Mcfile serves as the ship doctor aboard the Nirvana, a vessel that becomes the central setting for the events of Vandread Turbulence. Hailing from the male-dominated planet of Taraak, he is considered one of its elite citizens, a status so renowned that it is said he could obtain any position he desired simply by submitting a blank resume with only his name on it. As the only licensed medical practitioner on the fused ship, he quickly assumes responsibility for all medical emergencies, often overriding the initial objections of the female crew members. His presence is accepted as a necessity because the medical facilities on the female pirate ship were no longer functional, leaving them with no practical alternative for professional healthcare.

Duero is characterized as a remarkably calm and collected individual who approaches most situations with a clinical, analytical mindset. He displays a deep curiosity for understanding how things work, which naturally extends from his medical practice into a general interest in technology and physiology. Despite his elite background and composure, he is not infallible. When confronted with scenarios that fall outside his formal education and experience, particularly those involving female biology, he can become visibly confused and awkward. A notable example of this is his theoretical guidance for the delivery of a baby, a process he had only ever studied in books.

His primary motivation on the Nirvana is the pursuit of knowledge and the application of his skills to keep the crew alive. His analytical nature leads him to make significant discoveries, including important revelations regarding the heritage of one of the main male protagonists. He is also instrumental in studying and understanding the physiological differences of the female crew members, a subject that was previously entirely alien to him. His role on the ship extends beyond medicine; he is a core member of the small male contingent stranded among the female pirates, and his intelligence and steady demeanor help to gradually integrate the men into the functioning of the vessel.

Throughout the story, Duero develops a significant relationship with Parfait, the ship's head mechanic. She becomes the first woman he works closely with, and their professional partnership gradually deepens into a close friendship and later a mutual romantic attraction. This relationship represents a key part of his personal development, as it forces him to navigate personal feelings that are far outside his usual realm of empirical analysis. He also interacts with the other male crew members, serving as a more mature and level-headed counterpart to the often impulsive and frustrated actions of the others.

Several distinct traits define Duero's appearance and behavior. He is consistently depicted with long black hair that obscures the right side of his face, and he never shows the right side of his face to the audience. This visual quirk is directly acknowledged at a story's end when another character sneaks up and moves his hair aside, reacting with a pleased expression, though what she saw remains a mystery to the viewer. He is also noted to occasionally act in a manner that fans have described as yaoi-like, adding an ambiguous layer to his interactions. Physically, he is 17 years old, stands 188 cm tall, weighs 76 kg, and has blue eyes with black hair, fitting a bishonen aesthetic. His abilities are not limited to medicine; his elite Taraak background implies a broad intelligence, and his analytical skills make him crucial for solving complex problems, including technological and biological puzzles that arise during the crew's journey.
