Description
Kaede Fujieda is a character who appears in the anime Sakura Taisen: Sumire. She is the younger sister of Ayame Fujieda and was born in Tokyo, Japan on October 21st, 1901. Kaede is a young woman of 23 years with brown hair and brown eyes, standing 161 centimeters tall. Her professional role is that of the second Vice Commander of the first generation Imperial Combat Revue, a position she assumed following her sister's death.
In terms of personality, Kaede is a very professional and competent deputy commander. She exhibits a caring and nurturing behavior towards the members of the Flower Division, acting as a supportive older sister figure and a trusted confidante for them in both their professional and personal lives. While she can be commanding, serious, and display a stern attitude to maintain order, she also possesses a spontaneous and carefree side that can be quite comical, similar to other members of the division. This contrasts with her late sister, who was quieter and preferred traditional Japanese clothing. Kaede, in contrast, favors a more modern, Western-style of living and dress, reflecting her active and bright disposition.
Kaede’s motivations and worldview are heavily shaped by the fate of her older sister, who was willing to sacrifice herself for the greater good. Kaede personally rejects this philosophy of self-sacrifice and is adamantly opposed to achieving victory through the death of her comrades. She believes it is wrong to consider sacrificing oneself or one’s friends as an acceptable path forward, a sentiment she strongly impresses upon those under her command.
Her role in the story, particularly as seen in Sakura Taisen: Sumire, is one of authority and solemnity. In this narrative, she summons the character Sumire to formally sign discharge documents, commending Sumire for her long-standing role and contributions to the Flower Division. Before her time as Vice Commander, Kaede had a complex history. She graduated from military academy and worked as an agent for the Wise Man organization overseas. She also served as the commander of the short-lived European Star Division, a unit for which she personally rescued the member Reni Milchstraße from a German spiritual research institute.
Kaede’s development is defined by her determination to support the Imperial Combat Revue and protect those within it. While she sometimes misses her sister and grieves her loss, she is resolute in her decision to lead differently, striving to protect the team that her sister built without repeating the same tragic end. A notable ability is her keen insight and investigative skill, as she was able to deduce that a sniper attack on her commander was the work of an insider and discreetly ordered an investigation. She is also capable in combat, having been seen using a physical blow against an enemy soldier. Furthermore, she possesses mechanical knowledge and is able to coordinate logistical support, such as arranging for the team's transportation in emergencies.
