TV Special
Description
Hamu is an orphan boy who lives in the non-canon location known as the Ocean's Navel. He first appears in the One Piece TV special Adventure in the Ocean's Navel. Hamu has a normal appearance for a child his age, with shaggy brown hair that is sometimes tied into a small braid at the top and oval-shaped eyes. His outfit consists of a green and beige wooly shirt, brown pants, and gray boots with string tied around them.

Hamu is characterized by his bravery and his unwavering hope, which sets him apart from the other residents of his village. Despite the constant danger and suffering caused by the monsters that terrorize the island, he is the only villager who refuses to give up on finding a solution. To seek help from the outside world, he regularly sends messages in bottles up an air current that leads to the ocean above. This act demonstrates both his resourcefulness and his desperation for allies.

His primary motivation is to rid his village of the beasts that plague it and to avenge the death of his mother. Hamu's mother, who was the village chief, was killed ten years before the events of the special by the pirate Captain Joke when she tried to stop his invasion. After her death, Hamu was taken in by a guardian named Meroie, who cares for him deeply and worries about his safety. Meroie has largely given up hope, which creates a point of conflict between her protective nature and Hamu's persistent determination.

In the story, Hamu's role is to act as the catalyst who brings the Straw Hat Pirates into the conflict. Upon meeting Monkey D. Luffy and Roronoa Zoro, he is initially disappointed to learn they are only looking for treasure and not responding to his pleas for help. Furthermore, he harbors an immediate hatred for them because they are pirates, as it was pirates who killed his mother and destroyed his peaceful life. His relationship with Luffy evolves significantly over the course of the special. Hamu begins to trust Luffy when the captain agrees to help his town fight Captain Joke and the Beasts of God. This trust is solidified when Luffy saves him from a giant sea urchin and imparts the lesson that he must show his own strength if he wants to gain friends.

Hamu is not a notably skilled fighter and is mostly self-taught. During the final battle against the revived Captain Joke, he fights with a sword. His true strength lies not in combat prowess but in his courage and willpower. When confronting Joke, Hamu has a crucial moment of development. He stops fighting simply for revenge against the man who killed his mother and instead decides to fight to protect his village, just as his mother did. When Joke nearly kills him, Hamu calls out for his mother's help. This wish causes the magical treasure in the room to glow, and the spirit of his mother appears, granting him the strength and assistance to deliver the final blow to Captain Joke. This act, aided by the Straw Hats holding Joke down, results in the pirate's final defeat. After the battle concludes, Hamu watches the Straw Hats leave the island, having finally found the friends and protectors he had been searching for.
