Description
Jason Kodai is the name used in the English dub of the first Space Battleship Yamato movie for the character originally named Susumu Kodai. He is the central protagonist and a pivotal figure in the Earth Defense Force. Kodai comes from a family with a strong military background; his older brother, Mamoru Kodai, was a respected captain before his presumed death in battle. This personal loss, compounded by the death of his parents in an attack on Earth by the alien Gamilas Empire, profoundly shapes his early years and fuels his initial motivations.

At the start of his journey, the young man in his late teens is driven by a strong sense of vengeance and a hot-headed, impulsive nature. He initially holds a deep-seated grudge against Captain Juzo Okita, the commander of the battleship Yamato, whom he blames for the death of his brother. His rashness often puts him at odds with his more level-headed friend and classmate, Daisuke Shima, as they frequently clash over whether to prioritize combat or the mission of exploration. As the perilous voyage to the planet Iscandar progresses, however, Kodai undergoes a significant transformation. Through the hardships faced alongside his crewmates and by coming to understand Captain Okita’s wisdom and sacrifice, he begins to shed his reckless tendencies. His worldview expands beyond simple revenge, leading him to conclude that there are more important pursuits than fighting.

Kodai serves primarily as a frontline fighter and tactical leader on the Yamato. His official position is the leader of the battle group, a role that frequently places him in the cockpit of a Cosmo Zero fighter or on the bridge directing combat strategies. As the series progresses and Captain Okita’s health fails, Kodai rises to the occasion, eventually being promoted to acting captain and later assuming the full rank of captain in subsequent storylines. A key relationship in his development is with Yuki Mori, a fellow crew member. What begins as a professional camaraderie gradually deepens into a romantic bond, and she becomes a central figure in his life, grounding his more volatile impulses.

In later installments and the remake series Space Battleship Yamato 2199, his character is adjusted to be more composed and less overtly rebellious, though his core traits of courage and determination remain. Professionally, he continues to climb the ranks, captaining his own vessel, the Yuunagi, before once again taking command of the Yamato in the face of new cosmic threats. His notable abilities include exceptional piloting skills, natural leadership, and a tactical mind that becomes sharper with experience. He is consistently portrayed as a man of action who learns to temper his personal feelings of rage and loss for the greater good of his ship, his crew, and the future of Earth.
