Movie
Description
Mamoru Kodai is the older brother of Susumu Kodai and an officer in the Earth Defense Force. He serves as the captain of the missile destroyer Yukikaze and is portrayed as a natural and courageous leader, comfortable with command despite his relatively young age. His given name, meaning "to protect," reflects his deep sense of duty and his willingness to shoulder the burdens of responsibility.

In the first episode of the series, during the battle at Pluto, Mamoru disobeys a withdrawal order from Captain Okita, insisting that he cannot face the spirits of his fallen comrades if he retreats. He sacrifices his ship to draw enemy fire, allowing Okita's flagship to escape. He is initially believed dead, but it is later revealed that his ship crash-landed and he was taken prisoner by the Garmillas. During his captivity, the transport ship malfunctions and crashes on the planet Iscandar, where he is the sole survivor. Queen Starsha of Iscandar heals his injuries and protects him. Upon the arrival of the Yamato, Mamoru reunites with his brother Susumu, his friend Shiro Sanada, and Captain Okita. He had planned to return to Earth with the crew, but after learning of Starsha's love for him, he decides to remain on Iscandar to help build a new future with her. He and Starsha later have a daughter named Sasha.

In the later film Be Forever Yamato, Mamoru is serving as a staff officer in the Earth Defense Force. When Earth is invaded by the Dark Nebula Empire, he is captured and faces execution. To save Admiral Heikuro Todo, he uses a hidden explosive to sacrifice himself, dying so that the admiral may escape. This final act encapsulates his unwavering dedication to protecting others, even at the cost of his own life.

Mamoru Kodai's personality is defined by a strong moral compass and a sense of honor. He is willing to disobey orders when he believes it is the right thing to do, as seen in his initial refusal to retreat. He is a steadfast and inspiring figure to those who serve under him, motivating his crew through his example. He is also introspective, with a taste for poetry, a detail that underscores a more contemplative side beneath his warrior exterior. In the 2199 remake, he is described as a man who, regardless of the situation or the unfairness of orders, will see through what he has decided to do.

His key relationships include his younger brother Susumu, whom he deeply loves and later appears to as a guiding memory; his close friend and fellow officer Shiro Sanada, with whom he shares a bond of mutual respect; and his romantic partner Queen Starsha, with whom he chooses to stay on Iscandar. His character development moves from a soldier defined by duty and sacrifice to a survivor who finds personal happiness, only to embrace sacrifice once more for a greater cause.

Notable abilities include his skill as a commander and pilot. In the 2199 continuity, he is credited as the first Earthling to fire a shock cannon during the Second Battle of Mars. He is also a capable tactician, leading his destroyer in a suicidal diversion that saves the flagship. His legacy is one of protection, sacrifice, and the enduring impact of his choices on his brother and the crew of the Yamato.
