OVA
Description
In the anime episode.hack//Unison, BlackRose appears as a key participant in a large gathering of characters from across the franchise. This event takes place some time after the resolution of the Twilight Incident, allowing her to interact with players from the era of.hack//SIGN. During the episode, she is shown meeting other prominent characters at a bar in the root town of Carmina Gadelica. A notable moment in Unison is her immediate and spirited argument with Mimiru, a Heavy Blade from the earlier series, over the striking similarity of their character avatars. Mimiru accuses BlackRose of copying her style, but BlackRose confidently dismisses the claim, stating that she will be the one remembered as the legendary player. The tension between them is playful rather than hostile, and the group later travels together to the hidden area of Net Slum for a celebration. There, BlackRose is reunited with her partner Kite, and she pulls him away to dance with her, indicating the closeness of their friendship.

Outside of her specific role in Unison, BlackRose is best known as the main female protagonist of the original.hack video games and the novel series.hack//Another Birth, which retells the game's story from her perspective. Her appearance in The World is that of a young woman with pink hair, dark skin, and distinctive yellow or pink wave-like symbols, known as wave tattoos, on her body. She wears a set of reddish-violet armor and is a member of the Heavy Blade class, which means she wields large two-handed swords. She tends to favor broadswords over the katana-style blades also available to her class. The player controlling BlackRose is a sixteen-year-old high school student named Akira Hayami. In the real world, Akira is a talented tennis player, a skill that is humorously referenced in the parody episode.hack//GIFT where BlackRose wields a tennis racket as a weapon. She lives in Yokohama with her parents and is the older sister to two younger brothers, Fumikazu and Kouta.

BlackRose’s primary motivation for entering The World is serious and deeply personal. Her younger brother, Fumikazu, whose in-game name was Kazu, was attacked by a powerful data bug in a hidden dungeon and fell into a real-world coma as a result. Determined to find a way to save him, Akira logged into the game as BlackRose, despite having little prior experience with online games. When she first meets Kite, the protagonist of the games, she acts confrontational and argumentative. This tough exterior, however, is soon revealed to be an act meant to mask her own fear and uncertainty. After learning that Kite is on a similar quest to save his friend Orca, she quickly drops her guard and forms a strong alliance with him, becoming his most steadfast companion. Throughout their journey, she evolves from a frightened and inexperienced beginner into a courageous and reliable partner. Her character arc culminates in the final battle against the Phase Corbenik, where she is rendered temporarily comatose by its attack but ultimately recovers and is happily reunited with her awakened brother.

In terms of personality, BlackRose is direct, short-tempered, and often acts before thinking. She is not particularly skilled at solving puzzles and readily admits when a situation requires more intellect than she possesses. Despite her impulsive nature, she has a cheerful disposition and makes a conscious effort to never show weakness, even in dire situations. This desire to appear strong stems from her role as an older sister. When she discovers through an in-game email that Kite is actually younger than her, she adopts a protective, sisterly attitude towards him, offering him advice and scolding him when she feels it is necessary. Over the course of their adventure, she develops a small crush on Kite, though her pride prevents her from ever admitting it openly.

Her key relationships are central to her development. Her partnership with Kite is the most important, as they support each other's goals and grow stronger together. Among Kite’s other allies, she is very friendly with the cheerful item-collector Mistral, whom she regards as a big sister figure, and she becomes a mentor to the young player Natsume. Conversely, she finds the eccentric behavior of the heavy-armor enthusiast Piros to be annoying, and she develops a fierce rivalry with another female player, Terajima Ryoko, who competes with her for Kite’s attention. In the real world, Akira faces her own challenges, including bullying from envious upperclassmen on her school's tennis team. This background adds another layer to her character, explaining her resilience and her ability to handle pressure both in and out of the game. Her notable abilities, as a Heavy Blade, lie entirely in physical combat; she is a front-line fighter capable of dealing significant damage with her two-handed swords, making her an invaluable asset in the many battles she and Kite fight together.
