Description
Doremi Harukaze is the central protagonist of her story, a young girl whose ordinary life takes an extraordinary turn when she stumbles upon a hidden world of magic. Initially a third-grade elementary school student living in the fictional town of Misora, Doremi is an energetic and fundamentally kind-hearted child, though she is often clumsy, impulsive, and prone to fits of jealousy. She frequently proclaims herself to be the unluckiest pretty girl in the whole world, a catchphrase that sums up her tendency to find herself in comical and unfortunate situations, such as missing out on her favorite food, steak. Her academic struggles and mischievous behavior are balanced by an optimistic spirit and a deep, persistent compassion for those around her.

Doremi's journey begins with her long-held dream of becoming a witch. While searching for a lost cat, she discovers a curious shop called the Maho-do, where she correctly identifies the owner, Majo Rika, as a real witch. This act, however, triggers a curse that transforms Majo Rika into a frog, forcing Doremi to become a witch apprentice to atone for her mistake and earn the power to restore the witch to her original form. This initial mishap sets the stage for her role as the leader of a group of apprentice witches, which soon includes her two best friends, Hazuki Fujiwara and Aiko Senoo, and later her younger sister, Pop Harukaze. Her core motivation shifts over time from simply wanting to use magic for personal whims, like gaining the courage to confess a crush, to a more mature understanding that her goals can be achieved through personal effort rather than spells.

As the narrative progresses, Doremi's role evolves significantly. In the second series, she and her friends are entrusted with the care of Hana, a magical infant who is destined to become the next Witch Queen. This responsibility brings out a fiercely protective and maternal side of Doremi, who treats Hana like her own daughter and faces numerous challenges to ensure her health and happiness. Her development is also shaped by key relationships, including a rivalry with the idol Onpu Segawa, which eventually transforms into a deep friendship after Doremi’s genuine concern helps Onpu abandon harmful magic. She maintains a steadfast, supportive bond with the shy and gentle Hazuki, and her dynamic with the pragmatic Aiko often balances Doremi's spontaneity with reason. Her relationship with her younger sister Pop evolves from typical sibling rivalry into a loyal and protective older-sister dynamic. Romantic subplots involve childhood friend Tetsuya Kotake, whose constant teasing masks deeper feelings, and Prince Akatsuki, a wizard whose initial antagonistic role gives way to mutual affection.

Through trials ranging from patissier exams to confronting curses that threaten both the human and witch worlds, Doremi matures from a troublemaking child into a capable leader who values human connections above all else. In the final series, faced with the prospect of becoming a full witch and gaining an unnaturally long lifespan, Doremi leads her friends in renouncing their magic, choosing to live a normal human life. She then pursues her dream of opening a steakhouse, demonstrating that her true strength lies not in magical abilities but in her courage, empathy, and the bonds she has forged.

As a witch apprentice, Doremi uses a pink Magic Sphere and casts spells with the incantation Pirika Pirilala Popolina Peperuto, though her spells often misfire when she is distracted or emotional. Her magical aesthetic is defined by the color pink, reflected in her apprentice outfit and her signature hairstyle of long red hair styled into twin buns with pink scrunchies, one of which is often adorned with a yellow music note. Her love for the piano and a childhood trauma from a forgotten recital performance remain a complicated personal note in her background. Her story concludes with the powerful theme that while magic can be alluring, genuine happiness and purpose are found in the ordinary, extraordinary experience of being human.
