OVA
Description
Onpu Segawa is one of the central characters of the Ojamajo Doremi series, including the OVA Ojamajo Doremi Na-i-sho, where she is a main member of the cast. She enters the story partway through the first season as a popular child idol who transfers to the same elementary school as the other main characters. A singer, actress, and radio show host with a large following, she initially comes across as cool, composed, and somewhat self-centered, and she is soon revealed to be a witch apprentice trained by Majo Ruka, the rival of the girls' mentor Majo Rika. In her early appearances she acts as an antagonist, using magic for her own benefit rather than to help others, which puts her at odds with the other apprentices and their belief that magic should be used for other people.

Her background helps explain her guarded personality. Onpu was born on March 3 and comes from a family connected to both Hokkaido and Okinawa. Her father works as a long-distance sleeper train driver and is often away from home, while her mother, a former child idol who retired after an accident on stage left her unable to speak for a time, works as her manager. Onpu took up the entertainment career to fulfill the dream her mother had to give up, and this sense of responsibility made her highly professional, competitive, and hardworking from a young age. She became a witch apprentice after accidentally witnessing Majo Ruka use magic during summer training in Okinawa, turning the witch into a frog and becoming her student in order to make amends. To shield herself from the consequences of using forbidden magic that influences people's hearts and memories, she relied on a charm bracelet given to her by her teacher.

Her role in the story develops from rival to close friend. For much of her early time in the series, she keeps an emotional wall between herself and others, convinced that her life as an idol sets her apart from ordinary schoolchildren. Through her growing interactions with Doremi, Hazuki, and Aiko, and especially with Doremi, she gradually opens up, and she later admits that Doremi's friendship helped her remove the wall she had built around herself. Her most significant turning point comes near the end of the first season, when she uses forbidden magic to erase the memories of people who discovered the girls' secret. The backlash of this forbidden act places her under a curse that would put her to sleep for a hundred years unless she is saved within a day, and the other girls give up their witch qualifications to awaken her. From that point on, she becomes a loyal member of the group.

Within Na-i-sho, which takes place during the timeframe of the third season, Onpu continues balancing her demanding idol work with her life as a witch apprentice and her friendships. Her relationship with Doremi is affectionate and teasing, and she shares a warm bond with Hazuki and Aiko, later also with Momoko. She shows a caring side toward the magical baby Hana, whom the group helps raise, and she develops a lighthearted attachment to Tooru of the wizard group FLAT4. She also forms a bond with a fellow child idol named Karen, whom she initially meets as a rival. Over time, she grows from a cool, guarded performer into a kind and selfless friend, though she keeps her competitive spirit and strong work ethic. She has a habit of saying "tehe" when she is being playful or hiding something, and she is known for her purple hair styled in a side ponytail and her preference for the color purple.

As a witch apprentice, Onpu is highly talented and passes several apprentice exams by skipping grades, reaching an advanced level more quickly than her friends. She can read simple magical script and uses a flute-sounding magical tool called a Poron when casting her spells. Her magical stage chant is "Pururun Purun, suzuyaka ni," and she rides her broom in a distinctive sideways position. Her notable abilities extend beyond magic to singing, acting, and hosting her own radio program. Despite her cool exterior, she is a determined person who works hard to overcome her own weaknesses, such as training herself to eat foods she disliked in order to set an example for Hana, and she remains devoted to her craft and to the people she cares about.
