Description
Niina is one of the three supernatural spirits unleashed from a Chinese banyan tree when a seal falls off near the Kyan household. She is a jimunaa spirit, a type of tree-dwelling nature being from Okinawan folklore, and appears as a young girl with short pink hair and blue eyes. In the story, she and her fellow spirit Raana are freed from the banyan tree and begin living with the Kyan family, where they assist or interfere in the daily operations of the family’s soba shop, Kame Soba. Niina is energetic, mischievous, and often impulsive, leading to unintended trouble as she tries to help with chores or cooking. Her motivations are rooted in a desire to be useful and to understand the human world, though she initially lacks awareness of human customs and consequences. This leads to conflict, particularly with Nanao, the older Kyan sister, who is more serious and responsible. Over time, Niina’s relationship with Nanao evolves from frequent clashes into a cooperative bond, highlighted by moments of mutual understanding and shared activities. Niina’s role in the narrative is that of a catalyst for the supernatural and comedic events that disrupt the family’s routine, while also serving as a source of growth for the human characters who learn to accommodate her presence. As the series progresses, Niina develops a sense of accountability, notably when her mishandling of soba preparation angers a water spirit, prompting her to consider returning to the banyan tree. However, she ultimately stays through the support of Nanafa and the others. In the second season, Niina and Raana are called back to the spirit world by their mother to become proper Kimunshii spirits, marking her departure and the emotional conclusion of her arc within the human household. Niina’s notable abilities include the supernatural traits common to a tree spirit, such as the capacity to influence or interact with nature, though specific powers are not extensively detailed.
