TV Special
Description
Musashibō Benkei XXII is a supporting character in the anime television special Lupin the Third: The Secret Page of Marco Polo. He is the twenty-second generation head of a lineage descended from the legendary warrior monk Musashibō Benkei. He serves as the resident priest of a temple located deep in the mountains near Hiraizumi in Iwate Prefecture, Japan. His family has guarded Benkei’s seven traditional tools for centuries and has long searched for the location of Benkei’s legendary golden sword.

In terms of personality, Benkei XXII is a wise and composed elderly man who values peace and the well-being of his family. He carries the weight of his ancestral duty but does not want that burden to fall on the younger generation. He is quietly observant and perceptive, readily seeing the sincerity in others. When the swordsman Goemon Ishikawa XIII arrives at his temple during a period of personal crisis, Benkei XXII recognizes Goemon’s honorable nature and entrusts him with an important request.

His primary motivation is to protect his three granddaughters—Hiromi, Rumi, and Ami—from being consumed by the same obligation that has defined their family. He believes the relentless pursuit of the golden sword and the guardianship of the seven tools should not dictate their futures. To this end, he asks Goemon to intervene and help guide Hiromi, who has become overly driven by the family’s mission, away from that path.

Benkei XXII’s role in the story is to provide the connection between Marco Polo’s lost treasure and the ancient Japanese legacy of Benkei. He reveals the secret history of his family to Goemon and later, when Lupin and his associates arrive in Hiraizumi, he helps them understand that Marco Polo’s journal and Benkei’s hidden wealth are tied to the same location. His knowledge of local lore and the hidden chamber beneath the temple is crucial to unraveling the mystery.

Key relationships include his bond with Goemon, whom he treats as a respected ally and a potential savior for his family. He is a caring grandfather to his three granddaughters, especially Hiromi, whom he hopes to steer away from obsessive duty. He also interacts briefly with Lupin and the others, showing trust in their intentions.

Over the course of the special, Benkei XXII undergoes subtle development. Initially hesitant to involve outsiders, he becomes more open to help and ultimately places his faith in Goemon and the Lupin group. His decision to allow the granddaughters a freer future represents a break from centuries of tradition.

Notable abilities include his deep historical and esoteric knowledge concerning Benkei’s artifacts and the temple’s secrets. As a priest, he likely possesses some martial training, but his strength lies in wisdom and leadership rather than combat. He also demonstrates a quiet authority that commands respect from those around him.
