Adrienne Benex is the primary antagonist of the series, serving as the ruthless and ambitious leader of the Gaiatron Corporation. Her background is that of a powerful corporate executive who commands a vast research conglomerate. Her central motivation is the pursuit of the Luminous Whale, a mythical creature she wishes to capture and exploit for its valuable resources, specifically a rare element known as trontium that the whale is said to carry within its body. This places her in direct opposition to the main characters, who seek to protect the whale and its habitat.

In the story, Benex acts as the driving force behind the corporate pursuit of the Luminous Whale, using her company’s considerable resources to track and attempt to capture the creature. She is portrayed as a cold-hearted figure who is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve her goals, showing little regard for the natural world or anyone who stands in her way. Her role is that of a corrupting influence, representing greed and industrial exploitation of nature.

Her key relationships include her right-hand man, Gaulois, who aids her in her schemes, and Dr. Charles LeConte, a scientist obsessed with the Luminous Whale who works under her command. She has no personal connection to the protagonist group other than as a direct adversary. Regarding her development, the character meets a definitive end in the original Japanese version of the series. In that narrative, she is killed when the animals of the ocean, summoned by the Luminous Whale, attack her Antarctic base known as the Iron City. Seagulls disable the pilots of her escape helicopter, causing it to crash with her inside. The English-dubbed version, Tico and Friends, notably edits out this and other violent scenes, meaning her fate is altered or omitted in that adaptation. Aside from her authority and resources as the head of a major corporation, Benex possesses no notable physical or scientific abilities of her own.
