Description
Franklin Harlock Jr., often referred to simply as Harlock, is one of the two central characters in the anime Gun Frontier. He is a Westerner who travels across the harsh landscape of the American Old West alongside his close companion, Tochiro Oyama. In a notable departure from many other works by creator Leiji Matsumoto where the character of Harlock is the primary hero, this series presents Harlock as the sidekick to Tochiro, who takes on the leading role.

Harlock is characterized by a quiet, reserved, and somewhat careless demeanor. He is a man of few words, but his actions speak with authority, particularly in his role as an exceptionally skilled gunslinger. His skill with a revolver is unmatched, allowing him to draw and fire with incredible speed and accuracy. Despite his proficiency with firearms, his personal code includes a strong reluctance to shoot women, preferring to fire warning shots rather than directly harm them.

His past is shrouded in the life of a pirate, and it is during this time that his path first crossed with Tochiro's. In a significant event that shaped their bond, Harlock was involved in a raid where he encountered Tochiro. It was Tochiro who inflicted the distinctive scars on Harlock's face during a fight. Despite this violent introduction, Tochiro ultimately saved Harlock's life, creating a profound and unbreakable debt of gratitude. This rescue is the foundation of their deep friendship and partnership. Harlock is portrayed as a survivor who is not afraid of losing everything, a trait that others perceive as genuine bravery.

Within the story, Harlock's role is that of a steadfast ally and protector. Alongside Tochiro, he takes on various jobs to survive in the unforgiving "Gun Frontier," a lawless and hostile environment where the weak cannot prosper. Their main quest is to search for a lost clan of Japanese immigrants, which includes Tochiro's sister, Shizuku. Together, they challenge corrupt sheriffs, bandits, and other dangerous elements of the frontier. The duo's journey is also joined by a mysterious woman named Sinunora, whose intentions are initially unclear, and Harlock is wary of her as they travel from town to town.

The core of the narrative and of Harlock's character development revolves around his partnership with Tochiro. Their relationship is built on mutual respect, with Harlock often deferring to his friend's judgment. In a telling example, Harlock will not draw his weapon in a confrontation without receiving explicit permission from Tochiro first. This dynamic underscores Tochiro's role as the strategic mind and leader, while Harlock serves as the powerful enforcer and weapon. Tochiro, a master swordsman who can even dodge bullets, complements Harlock's gunplay perfectly.

Harlock's notable abilities are primarily physical and combat-oriented. He is, above all else, a peerless gunfighter whose speed and precision make him a formidable opponent in the wild west setting. His quiet, stoic personality and his unwavering loyalty to Tochiro drive his motivations, making him a classic example of a noble, if taciturn, gunslinging hero.
