Description
Frank Western Harlock Jr., often referred to simply as Harlock, is a central figure in the Gun Frontier narrative. He is a tall, rugged man with brown hair and distinct facial scars, and he typically wears a hat and vest, embodying the visual archetype of a seasoned wanderer. His background before the events of the story is that of a former pirate, a life that directly led to his current path. During one of his raids, he encountered a short samurai named Tochiro Oyama, who, fighting for Japan, inflicted the scars on Harlock's face. Despite this violent confrontation, Tochiro ultimately saved Harlock's life, forging an unbreakable bond between the two men.

In Gun Frontier, Harlock is portrayed as a man of few words, possessing a calm and somewhat careless demeanor. He is the quick-drawing partner in the duo, his primary role being that of an expert gunslinger whose skill with a revolver is unrivaled. His motivations are deeply tied to his companion; the pair travel across the harsh and unforgiving landscape known as the Gun Frontier. Their journey is driven by the goal of finding survivors from Tochiro's village, Samurai Creek, which was massacred by a sinister organization led by the shadowy figure known as Darkmeister. Specifically, they are searching for Tochiro's sister, Shizuku, a brilliant inventor and metalworker.

Harlock's role in the story is that of the formidable protector and loyal friend, though the partnership is more balanced than it might first appear. While the stoic and powerful Harlock provides the gunfighting muscle, he holds Tochiro in the highest regard, crediting the samurai with saving his life and ensuring he is still alive. Their relationship is the core of the series, a buddy-duo navigating a lawless frontier where they take on various odd jobs, including bounty hunting and killing, to survive. This version of the character shows a less brooding side compared to his more famous space-faring incarnations, allowing for moments of camaraderie and a goofier, more human personality as he bickers and travels with his friend.

His development throughout the series is intertwined with the quest itself. He remains a steadfast anchor for the group, which eventually includes the mysterious woman Sinunora, as they tear across the frontier confronting bandits, corrupt sheriffs, and the agents of Darkmeister. Beyond his legendary speed and accuracy with a revolver, one of Harlock's most notable abilities is his unshakable courage and lack of fear, willing to give away his last cent or face any opponent without hesitation. His character serves as the iconic, strong, and silent swordsman of the wild west, defined by his loyalty, his deadly skill, and his quiet determination to see his friend's mission through to the end.
