Description
Aldebaran is the Gold Saint of Taurus in the 18th century Holy War, the central conflict of the Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas story. His true birth name is Hasgard, which is said to carry meanings including torn, sincere, and noble. Upon becoming the Taurus Saint, he chose to abandon his given name and adopt Aldebaran, the name of the brightest star in the Taurus constellation, as a symbol of his dedication to Athena and his desire to live up to the legacy of his title. He is a man of enormous physical stature, consistent with the powerful image of his constellation, and hails from Portugal.
Despite his intimidating and gigantic appearance, Aldebaran possesses a personality defined by nobility, compassion, and a profound sense of duty. He is strict in matters of etiquette and loyalty, yet he is fundamentally warm-hearted and treats those around him with kindness and respect. This gentle nature stands in stark contrast to his raw physical power. He is particularly known for his paternal and brotherly attitude, especially towards the younger generation of Saints. He places immense value on the potential of youth, viewing them as the seeds and future of the world. His motivations are rooted in protection: he fights to defend Athena, his comrades, and above all, the innocent, often risking his own life to ensure that future generations can live in peace.
In the story of the Holy War, Aldebaran serves as a powerful and steadfast guardian of the Sanctuary, acting as a frontline defender against the invading Specters of Hades. His role is not only as a warrior but also as a mentor. He personally trained three disciples Teneo, Salo, and Celintha, having saved them when they were orphans and guiding their development as Saints. One of his most significant battles is against Bennu Kagaho, a powerful and tormented Specter. During this fight, Aldebaran demonstrates his wisdom by perceiving that Kagaho is not inherently evil. He fights not with the intent to kill, but to teach the young warrior a lesson, ultimately sparing Kagaho’s life after defeating him with his ultimate technique, Titan's Nova.
His key relationships among the other Gold Saints reveal different facets of his character. He acts as a trustworthy older brother figure to Libra Dohko, yet shows a more youthful and unguarded side when in the presence of Sagittarius Sisyphus, indicating a deep friendship. He also shows great respect for his fellow Saints, such as regretting not speaking more with Virgo Asmita after learning of his sacrifice. Aldebaran’s development is marked by his unwavering resolve in the face of death. He endures horrific injuries, including having his eardrums ruptured to counter a sonic attack and receiving fatal wounds from Kagaho. In his final moments, after his heart is stopped by the Specter Cube's Death Messenger technique, he is able to move and unleash one last Titan's Nova by remembering his duty to his disciples and the words of his friend Sisyphus, destroying his enemy even as he dies standing on his feet. His soul later appears alongside the other fallen Gold Saints to lend their power for a final assault on Hades, with his spirit uttering the words for the generations.
Aldebaran is considered one of the most powerful Gold Saints of his era, noted specifically for having the fastest attack among them. He fights using a unique iai stance, keeping his arms crossed before unleashing devastating blows. His signature technique is the Great Horn, a tremendously fast and destructive energy blast projected from his palms. His ultimate and most powerful attack is Titan's Nova, a fearsome area-of-effect technique in which he slams his fist into the ground, creating a massive eruption of cosmos that overturns the earth and destroys everything within range. A precursor technique called Titan's Break was also used earlier in his life. His legacy endures after the Holy War, as his surviving disciple, Teneo, inherits the Taurus Cloth and carries on his teachings.
