Description
Bat Wimber is a minor antagonist who appears in the Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas manga and anime series. He serves the god Hades as one of the 108 Specters, the army of the Underworld. His specific rank is the Earthly Judgement Star or Earthly Searching Star. Wimber is a subordinate of Pandora, the commander of the Specter army, and is often partnered with another Specter named Dullahan Cube.
Wimber is a physically imposing figure, standing 181 centimeters tall with a slender build. He has a young appearance, seemingly in his twenties, with short, spiky black hair and black eyes. His most prominent facial features are his long, sharp fangs, which give him a distinctly vampiric look. This monstrous quality is further reflected in his Surplice, the spectral armor of the Specters, which is designed to resemble a bat, complete with wing-like elements.
In terms of personality, Wimber embodies the predatory traits associated with his namesake animal. He displays a confidence that borders on arrogance, believing in his own superiority over his opponents. This makes him reckless and incautious in combat, as he is quick to exploit any weakness he perceives without considering potential counterattacks. His behavior is also animalistic; he is known to hang upside down from rock cliffs like a sleeping bat and possesses a taste for blood, reinforcing his vampire-like nature.
Wimber is sent on a mission by Pandora, who becomes concerned about the influence the Bronze Saint Pegasus Tenma has on the human host of Hades. Along with his partner Cube, Wimber is dispatched to the Sanctuary in Greece to assassinate Tenma. His primary role in the story is as a direct threat to the protagonist, serving as an obstacle for the Saints to overcome.
During the nighttime assault on the Sanctuary, Wimber demonstrates his key ability, the Nightmare Sonar. This technique allows him to summon a massive swarm of bats that emit ultrasonic waves, which can send any listener into a deep, inescapable slumber. This power proves initially effective, incapacitating Tenma and several other Saints. However, the Taurus Gold Saint, Aldebaran, is able to counter the attack by piercing his own eardrums, rendering himself deaf to the sonic waves.
The fight against Aldebaran reveals Wimber's tactical cunning. He and Cube work together, with Wimber using his bats to obscure Aldebaran's vision and attack from his blind spot, exploiting an old injury where the Saint had lost an eye. Despite this coordinated assault, Aldebaran's immense strength and resilience prove to be overwhelming. In a decisive move, the Taurus Saint seizes Wimber by the neck and slams him into the ground with enough force to snap his neck, killing him instantly. Wimber does not experience any significant character development or redemption arc; he appears solely as an assassin and is swiftly defeated, serving to highlight the power of the Gold Saints.
Beyond his primary technique, Wimber possesses other abilities typical of his form. His bat-like Surplice grants him the power of flight, allowing him to move freely through the air. He also demonstrates a limited form of control over regular bats, using them not only to deliver his Nightmare Sonar but also as a screen to disorient and confuse his enemies during combat.
