Description
Bennu Kagaho is a central antagonist from the 18th century Holy War, serving as the Celestial Violent Star Specter of Hades. His Surplice, the Bennu, takes its name and design from a divine bird in Egyptian mythology associated with the sun and creation, drawing clear parallels to the legend of the phoenix. At eighteen years old, Kagaho is a young man of average height with a lean, muscular build. He has sharp, focused eyes and dark, spiky hair. His demeanor is typically one of simmering intensity, often appearing aloof, arrogant, and quick to anger. He is fiercely individualistic, disliking crowds and large assemblies, and prefers to act alone rather than as part of a unit, which sets him apart from the more regimented hierarchy of the Underworld.
Beneath this abrasive exterior, however, lies a deeply wounded psyche. The core of Kagahos personality is a profound, all-consuming rage directed at himself, the world, and his own perceived failures. This anger is rooted in the tragic memory of his younger brother, Sui. In their past, Kagaho fought constantly to protect his sickly brother, who could not bear sunlight. Feeling he was a burden and that Kagaho would only continue to suffer because of him, Sui took his own life. Kagaho was left with an overwhelming sense of guilt, believing he had failed the only person he loved. He channels this pain into violence and nihilism, seeing no inherent meaning in the world. His loyalty to Hades is not born from a love of destruction but from a desperate search for a new purpose and someone new to protect. He sees a reflection of his lost brother in the gentle, pure-hearted boy Alone, the vessel of Hades, and thus transfers all his devotion onto him. This loyalty is so absolute that perceptive warriors like Taurus Aldebaran could sense that Kagaho was not truly evil at his core, only a lost soul consumed by sorrow.
Kagahos role in the story is that of a powerful, recurring enforcer for Hades. He is one of the most formidable Specters, possessing power that rivals or even surpasses the three judges of the Underworld, and is renowned as the fastest among the 108 Specters. His first major confrontation is against Virgo Asmita, who travels to the underworld to find the sacred tree, where Asmita sees through Kagahos rage to the suffering beneath. During a battle with Leo Dohko, he notices a small wound on Alones arm and, mistakenly believing Dohko was responsible, flies into a vengeful fury. This leads him to the Sanctuary, where he is intercepted by Taurus Aldebaran. Their fight is a turning point; Aldebaran defeats him but spares his life, stating that he senses no true evil in him, an act of mercy that deeply confounds and angers Kagaho. He later repays this debt by defending Aldebarans corpse from being desecrated by a fellow Specter.
Kagahos most significant relationship is with Libra Dohko, whom he views as a rival and a target for his displaced rage. This rivalry evolves throughout the war, culminating in their final battle in the third Demon Palace, Earth. Here, Kagaho has fully embraced his role, stating that he has buried his human feelings. He unleashes his full power, his body transforming into an "Inferno Fiend" wreathed in black flames hot enough to melt a Gold Cloth. In a desperate move, Dohko uses the suicide technique Rozan Rising Dragon, which locks both of them in an embrace and propels them towards the sun. As they ascend through the atmosphere, with death imminent, Kagaho has a final moment of clarity. Seeing the sun, he remembers his brothers wish to one day walk freely under its light. His self-destructive rage finally gives way to a genuine, selfless act. He uses his own power to push Dohko back to Earth, sacrificing himself to save his rival. In his final moments, his black flames transform into a brilliant red and take the shape of a phoenix, signifying the completion of his character arc from a specter of hatred to a soul of fire and rebirth. His last wish is for Athena and her Saints to save Alone, finally releasing him from his cycle of grief.
In battle, Kagaho is a devastating pyromancer who generates unique black flames with his Cosmo. His techniques are all high-temperature assaults. Corona Blast allows him to create and hurl enormous spheres of solar fire, which can be used in rapid succession or even defensively as a barrier. His signature technique, Crucify Ankh, fires stakes of black flame that impale the opponent, pinning them to a massive, fiery cross where they are burned until nothing remains. His ultimate technique, Rising Darkness, generates a small, black sun that radiates intense, dehydrating heat, turning the battlefield into a scorching desert and evaporating the moisture from an opponents body. His power is such that he could challenge Gold Saints on equal footing, and his speed is considered unmatched among the forces of Hades.
