Description
Edward de Sylph is a fictional character who appears exclusively in the Saint Seiya spin-off manga and anime, The Lost Canvas. He serves as a Specter, a soldier in the army of the underworld god Hades, and holds the rank of a Terrestrial Star, specifically the Terrestrial Flight Star. His surplice, the spectral armor, represents the Sylph, a mythical creature from European folklore associated with air. In terms of appearance, Edward is a slender young man with black hair that reaches his shoulders, kept out of his eyes by a few strands that fall across his forehead. In the animated adaptation, his eyes are black. His surplice is a steely black, a common color for Specter armors, and is notably equipped with a pair of wings.

Edward is introduced as the apparent leader of a small group of five Specters dispatched by Pandora, the commander of Hades' army, on a mission to Jamir. Their objective is to recover the sacred fruits of the Mokurenji tree, which had been stolen from the Underworld by the Saints Pegasus Tenma, Unicorn Yato, and Crane Yuzuriha. His personality aligns closely with that of many of Hades' subordinates: he is overconfident, arrogant, and consistently underestimates his enemies' power. He obeys the commands of Hades and Pandora without question and shows no fear of death in battle. This fearlessness is not born of true courage but from the assurance that, as a favored Specter of Hades, he will be immediately resurrected after being struck down in combat.

The role Edward plays in the story is relatively brief but serves a critical narrative purpose. Upon arriving at the bridge leading to Jamir, his group is immediately intercepted and effortlessly annihilated by Virgo Asmita, one of the most powerful Gold Saints of Athena. True to their nature as Hades' Specters, Edward and his comrades quickly rise from the dead and launch a second assault on the Jamir tower. They confront Tenma and his allies, dying and resurrecting multiple times in a seemingly endless cycle. This constant revival highlights a key advantage of the Specter army: their immortality granted by Hades, which makes conventional defeat meaningless.

Key relationships for Edward include his antagonistic dynamic with the Bronze Saints Tenma, Yato, and Yuzuriha, against whom he fights directly. He also interacts with the cunning Specter Cait Sith Cheshire, who arrives on the battlefield after their first defeat. While Edward initially leads the group, Cheshire takes command, mocking Edward and the others for their predicament while reminding them of their immortal nature. Edward’s ultimate adversary is Virgo Asmita, the Gold Saint whose cosmos far surpasses the Specters' own power.

Throughout his short engagement, Edward does not demonstrate any highly unique or named combat techniques. Like all cosmo users, he possesses superhuman strength, endurance, and the ability to generate and project destructive energy, seen in the purple energy blasts he fires at the Jamir tower's protective barrier. His surplice's wings likely grant him the ability to manipulate air currents, a power thematically tied to his Sylph namesake, but he does not display this capability in a significant way during his only battle. The primary source of his threat is not his individual power but the blessing of Hades, which allows him to return from death again and again.

Edward’s development is nonexistent, as he remains a static, one-dimensional antagonist whose purpose is to demonstrate the overwhelming power of a Gold Saint and the mechanics of the Specters' immortality. His ultimate fate is sealed when Asmita, having elevated his cosmos, uses the stolen Mokurenji fruits to create a sacred rosary of 108 beads. This artifact has the power to seal the souls of the Specters, permanently nullifying Hades' gift of resurrection. As a final act, Asmita unleashes his devastating techniques, and Edward, along with his entire squadron, is killed for the last time, his soul sealed within the rosary and his body disintegrating. His death serves as the first major demonstration of the new weapon created by the Saints to truly combat the immortal army of Hades.
