TV Special
Description
Duke Gerard Musca Vespaland is a central antagonist in the 2009 crossover special. He holds the title of Duke within the Kingdom of Vespania, an absolute monarchy, and is the younger brother of the late Queen Sakura Aldia. As the brother of the sovereign, he was the uncle to the heirs to the throne, Prince Gill Cowell Vespaland and Princess Mira Julietta Vespaland.
On the surface, Duke Gerard presents himself as a sorrowful and loyal member of the royal family, deeply affected by a family tragedy. This public persona obscures a deeply ambitious, ruthless, and calculating nature. He believes that a monarch without personal ambition is unfit to rule. This philosophy drives him to commit heinous acts, as he views his sister, the Queen, as weak because she valued the kingdom's natural beauty and traditional mining over aggressive economic development through resource exploitation. His true personality is that of a manipulative and impatient conspirator who is willing to destroy his own family and betray his nation to achieve power.
The Duke's primary motivation is to seize the throne of Vespania for himself. He strongly opposes the direction of the kingdom under Queen Sakura, arguing for rapid economic development that she rejects on environmental grounds. Unable to sway her, he orchestrates a violent coup. His goal is not merely to eliminate the current ruler but to systematically remove every person ahead of him in the line of succession. He sees Princess Mira as an obstacle, deeming her unsuitable to rule, and plans to take power after her death. His actions are entirely self-serving, driven by a hunger for authority and a belief in his own superior vision for the country.
In the story, Duke Gerard is the true mastermind behind the crisis that grips the kingdom. He is directly responsible for the deaths of Queen Sakura and Prince Gill. During a royal hunt, he kills the Queen. When Prince Gill discovers her body and is overcome with grief, Duke Gerard fatally shoots him as well. To conceal his crime, the Duke places the murder weapon in the dead prince's hand, staging the scene to look like a tragic accident where Prince Gill, in a fit of guilt, shot the Queen and then himself. The Duke is later present when an assassination attempt is made on Princess Mira, but this is part of his larger scheme. When his plot begins to unravel thanks to the investigations of Conan Edogawa and the interventions of Lupin III, the Duke abandons subtlety. He attempts to murder everyone who has discovered the truth, including Conan, Lupin, Princess Mira, and her associates, by detonating explosives. He is ultimately defeated and apprehended for his crimes.
The Duke's key relationships are defined by ambition and betrayal. As the brother of Queen Sakura, he held a position of trust but betrayed her by committing murder. As the uncle to Prince Gill and Princess Mira, he repaid their familial bond with violence and treachery, killing the prince and plotting to kill the princess. His relationship with other characters is adversarial, as he seeks to eliminate anyone who threatens his plan, including the international thieves and detective who expose him.
In terms of development, Duke Gerard begins the special as a respected and grieving nobleman, but is revealed to be the villain. He does not undergo a redemption arc or a change of heart. Instead, his trajectory is one of increasing desperation and exposure as his elaborate scheme collapses. The development lies in the revelation of his true nature, transforming from a seemingly loyal Duke into a desperate criminal and traitor willing to commit mass murder to escape justice.
The Duke possesses several notable abilities, primarily related to his skills as a hunter and a conspirator. He is proficient with firearms, having used a revolver to assassinate Prince Gill and a Winchester Model 70 rifle during the initial hunting scene. His most significant ability is his capacity for deception and long-term planning, as he successfully orchestrated a royal murder and framed his own nephew for the act. However, his abilities are ultimately no match for the combined efforts of his adversaries, and he is outwitted and captured in the end.
