TV Special
Description
Gerald Muska Vesparand, often referred to as Duke Gerald, is a central antagonist in the 2009 television special. He holds the title of Duke of Vespania and is the younger brother of the sovereign, Queen Sakura.

As the queen's brother, Gerald is the uncle to both the crown prince, Gill Cowell Vesparand, and the princess, Mira Julietta Vesparand. He is a man driven by greed and a lust for power. His primary motivation is to ascend to the throne of Vespania for his own financial enrichment. The queen had forbidden the sale and use of a rare ore found within the kingdom due to her pacifist nature and its potential to be used in warfare. Gerald’s plan is to seize control of the kingdom so he can sell this valuable resource, blatantly disregarding his sister’s wishes for personal wealth.

His role in the story is that of a mastermind and murderer. The plot is set in motion when Queen Sakura is killed during a royal hunt. All initial evidence points to Prince Gill, who is found dead next to his mother, apparently having committed suicide out of guilt for accidentally shooting her. However, it is ultimately revealed that Duke Gerald was the true culprit. He murdered his own sister, the queen, and then killed Prince Gill, staging the scene to look like the young prince’s suicide after he had killed his mother. His motive is to clear his path to the throne, making Princess Mira the heir and, believing her to be a young and inexperienced woman he can manipulate.

Throughout the special, Gerald maintains a public facade of a grieving family member. For instance, when he discovers the body of Prince Gill, he expresses performative sadness, lamenting that it is too late to stop the tragedy. This deceptive personality is a key aspect of his character, as he hides his ruthless ambition behind a mask of aristocratic dignity and familial concern.

The character’s development is not one of positive change but rather the unmasking of his true nature. Starting as a seemingly loyal duke and grieving uncle, the story’s climax reveals him to be a calculating and power-hungry murderer. The decisive evidence that unravels his scheme comes from Queen Sakura’s foresight. She had secretly replaced the hunting cartridges with blanks because she disapproved of killing. This fact proves that neither Gerald nor the prince could have accidentally shot the queen, forcing the duke’s guilt into the light.

In terms of abilities, Gerald is depicted as a capable marksman, proficient with firearms such as the Winchester Model 70 hunting rifle and a revolver, which he uses to carry out his assassinations. His most notable ability, however, is his capacity for cold, calculated manipulation. He is able to orchestrate a complex murder plot and maintain his composure in the chaotic aftermath, only being exposed through the combined deductive efforts of Conan Edogawa and the master thief Lupin III.
