TV-Series
Description
Kana Nakamachi is the main protagonist of the story, a thirteen-year-old middle school girl who has experienced profound loss at a very young age. Having already lost her parents prior to the events of the series, Kana was living with her grandmother, who was her last remaining relative. At the very beginning of the narrative, her grandmother also passes away, leaving Kana completely alone in the world. This traumatic situation is compounded by a misunderstanding: when officials arrive at her grandmother's house to take away the deceased woman's belongings to settle debts, Kana, in a state of panic, mistakenly believes that she herself is going to be repossessed as well. Fearing this fate, she grabs what she can and flees, setting the stage for her search for a new place to live, which ultimately leads her to the Fuhshin Gazette newspaper delivery office.
In terms of personality, Kana is characterized as being particularly soft-spoken and shy. She is easily frightened and has a strong tendency to overreact to situations she does not fully understand, frequently misinterpreting the words and actions of those around her. This anxious nature is most pronounced in the presence of her co-worker Haruka, whose advances greatly unsettle her. Kana also has a rich inner world, prone to having many delusions and struggling alone with her worries. She is deeply affected by the death of her grandmother, and a key part of her emotional journey involves a fear of loneliness and the worry that she will inevitably have to leave the new, makeshift family she has found at the Fuhshin Gazette. Her character has a unique quirk where her laughter can sometimes become so unnerving that it creates a frightening atmosphere, suggesting an underlying trauma that she eventually begins to overcome with help from her friend Mika. She also harbors a significant fear of dark places.
Kana's primary motivation throughout the story is to prove herself useful and find her place within her new home and workplace. Despite her clumsiness and lack of confidence in many general skills, she is determined to help the newspaper however she can. This determination drives her to take on the role of a newspaper deliverer, a job she finds much more demanding than it first appears. Her role in the story is that of the central point of view, the newest member of a tight-knit and eccentric community, through whom the audience is introduced to the daily life and fast-paced yet joyous environment of the newspaper office. Her presence often serves to highlight the unique and self-assertive personalities of the other residents.
Kana's key relationships form the core of her development. She lives and works alongside a diverse group of girls at the Fuhshin Gazette. She is often aided and protected by Saki Amano, the elementary school-aged assistant chief who, despite her youth, acts as the mature and serious anchor of the group, frequently reprimanding the others and stepping in to help Kana. Her relationship with Haruka, the self-proclaimed lolicon, is one of fear and perpetual discomfort, as Haruka frequently invades her personal space, especially when intoxicated. She also lives with the openly affectionate lesbian couple, Yume and Yuuki, who, despite their eccentricities, represent a stable and loving relationship. Outside the office, her most significant relationship is with Mika Kujiin, a girl who works for a rival newspaper delivery service. Mika develops a crush on Kana, which manifests as a classic tsundere attitude of irritability and hidden affection. In the manga, these feelings are reciprocated by Kana, who begins to have strange feelings for Mika in return, such as enjoying seeing her nervous and waiting for her. Through Mika's guidance and patience, Kana also makes progress on her issues with laughter.
Throughout the series, Kana shows notable development from a lonely, frightened, and emotionally fragile orphan into a more integrated and resilient member of her community. Although she is sometimes considered an average or even boring character who writes diary entries to her deceased grandmother to process her daily experiences, being at the Fuhshin Gazette allows her to form new bonds and slowly build a new sense of family. This helps her move from a state of constant anxiety about her future to a more stable existence where she is valued for her contributions.
In terms of abilities, while Kana is often portrayed as clumsy and lacking in general life skills, she possesses one notable talent: she is rather good at cooking. This practical skill makes her a valuable member of the household. Her primary notable ability, however, is not a physical or professional one, but an emotional one: her willingness to keep trying and prove herself to be a capable and helpful person in spite of her fears and insecurities.
