Description
Hikaru Hasama is a character from the Beyblade: Metal Fusion anime, where she is introduced as a talented and determined Blader who eventually becomes a key supporting figure in the series. Her full name in Japanese order is Hasama Hikaru. She has a distinctive appearance with cool blue hair styled in a messy bob and bluish-purple eyes. Her original outfit consists of a red jacket over a white and blue shirt, tan shorts, brown boots, and a black choker, with white gloves and a belt that criss-crosses over her shorts. She carries her beyblade, Storm Aquario 100HF/S, on her right hip.
Hikaru was not always the serious and somewhat distant Blader she appears to be at the start of the series. Her personality was shaped by a difficult childhood in which she would enter tournaments only to be soundly defeated by other boys who would mock her as she cried. It was her mother, who was apparently ill, that convinced Hikaru never to abandon her dreams, instilling in her the belief that determination is everything and that the only way to become stronger is to face opponents stronger than herself. This backstory forged her into a cold and focused wanderer, moving from place to place and defeating any Blader who crossed her path, searching for a challenge that would push her to the next level.
Her primary motivation in the Metal Fusion series is to become a top-tier Blader, but her goals evolve significantly following a traumatic event. She travels to Metal Bey City with the specific aim of challenging the renowned Blader, Gingka Hagane. Although she loses to Gingka, he encourages her to focus more on having fun during battles, a lesson she takes to heart. However, Hikaru's most pivotal moment occurs during the Battle Bladers tournament, where she faces the overwhelmingly powerful Ryuga. Her resolve falters as she senses his dark power, and in the battle, Ryuga uses his special move, Dragon Emperor Soaring Bite Strike, to destroy a chunk of the arena, leaving Hikaru and her beyblade completely defeated. The power of his bey, Lightning L-Drago, drains her energy, leaving her in a comatose state for the remainder of the tournament. This defeat is so deeply traumatizing that she develops symptoms consistent with post-traumatic stress disorder, unable to continue beybattling and even flinching when she sees L-Drago again or when she is nearly struck by an attack from her friend Tsubasa.
Hikaru's role in the story is initially that of a rival and ally to the main protagonist, Gingka Hagane, and a member of his supporting group of Bladers. She is shown to be a highly capable fighter, but her competitive career is cut short. After her defeat and subsequent trauma, she transitions to a support role. Beginning in Beyblade: Metal Masters, she becomes Ryo Hagane's, Gingka's father, assistant at the World Beyblading Association (WBBA). In this capacity, she wears a dark blue office-style suit and aims to ensure that everyone can have fun beyblading and that no other Blader has to go through the negative experiences she did in her childhood. She retains her professional and calm attitude, which makes her an excellent support for the often forgetful and impulsive Ryo.
Hikaru has several key relationships within the series. She shares a friendly rivalry with Kenta Yumiya, whom she battles numerous times upon first arriving in Metal Bey City; she defeats him eight times in a row before they finally have a draw and then a loss. She is a friend and fellow competitor to Gingka Hagane and Kyoya Tategami, even teaming up with Kyoya during the Survival Battle to take out other Bladers who attempted to interrupt their match. She is also friends with Hyoma, and she is seen cheering for Gingka during his important battles. Her only real enemy is Ryuga, who becomes a trauma button for her after their battle.
Over the course of the series, Hikaru undergoes significant development. She starts as a cold, almost uninterested Blader hardened by past failures. Her battle with Gingka begins to warm her personality, making her more open and friendly. The tragic and traumatic defeat at the hands of Ryuga completely derails her career as a competitive Blader, but she channels her passion into a new direction as a WBBA assistant, where she becomes more gentle while still keeping her professional dedication. She shows a great deal of bravery when, during Gingka's final battle against Ryuga, she, along with Kyoya and Tsubasa, shields Gingka from physical harm, and their combined spirit helps revive them from their comas.
As a Blader, Hikaru is known for her tricky and tactical style. Her beyblade, Storm Aquario, is designed for speed and evasion. Her signature special move is called Infinite Assault, known as Infinity Wave in the original Japanese version. This technique involves Aquario moving at such incredible speeds that it creates multiple afterimages, making it appear as if dozens of copies of the bey are attacking the opponent simultaneously, confusing them and hiding the real one among the illusions. While this move is effective, her fighting style has a noted weakness: the illusions can be shattered by a powerful area-of-effect defense, and her bey lacks the raw power to withstand strong, direct attacks from top-tier Bladers like Kyoya or Ryuga.
