Description
Wakaba Nogi is a 14-year-old second-year middle school student and the main protagonist of "Nogi Wakaba is a Hero," appearing throughout the "Yuki Yuna is a Hero" franchise. She has long, dirty-blonde hair typically tied in a ponytail with a lavender ribbon, lavender eyes, and stands 163 cm tall. Her blood type is A, and her birthday is June 20. Wakaba is the ancestor of Nogi Sonoko, and her family lineage later holds high status within the Taisha organization.
She originates from Shimane Prefecture, where she survived a devastating Vertex attack during a 2015 field trip that killed her classmates and ignited her desire for revenge. During this attack, she discovered the sacred sword Ikutachi after receiving an oracle from her childhood friend, Uesato Hinata. The sword allows her to cut through Vertexes without transforming. Wakaba later helped evacuate survivors to Kagawa Prefecture. By 2018, she became the leader of the Taisha's first Hero Team, tasked with defending Shikoku. The team included Hinata, Takashima Yuuna, Doi Tamako, Iyojima Anzu, and Koori Chikage.
Wakaba exhibits a serious, strong-willed personality with natural leadership and charisma, making her wildly popular. Her stern exterior can sometimes intimidate others, masking a kindhearted nature and hidden soft side. She particularly enjoys being spoiled by Hinata, such as having her ears cleaned. Initially motivated by vengeance against the Vertexes, she evolves to prioritize protecting the present, strengthening her leadership.
As a Hero, Wakaba wields Ikutachi in combat and activates two Trump Cards. Yoshitsune enhances her speed and agility to extreme levels, enabling pseudo-flight and gliding. Daitengu grants black wings, fire manipulation, and the ability to extend her sword's reach hundreds of meters. Using Daitengu causes severe physical consequences: she sustained second to third-degree burns requiring skin transplants across her body, leaving permanent scars.
Her story involves significant tragedy. After losing contact with fellow Hero Shiratori Utano (with whom she had a friendly rivalry over udon versus soba), she witnessed Nagano's fall to Vertexes. Her team suffered heavy losses: Tamako and Anzu died in battle, causing Yuuna to become emotionally unstable. Chikage, psychologically deteriorating, eventually attacked classmates and Wakaba before being killed while protecting her. Yuuna later died fighting Vertexes. These events led Wakaba to retire as a Hero.
In later years, she served as the Taisha's propaganda figure, wearing imposing samurai-style outfits to carry swords. By the events of "Fuyou Yuuna is Not a Hero," she is elderly (age 86/87) and monitors descendants like Fuyou Yuuna and Yuzuki Yuuna. She intervenes to stop them from climbing the Shinju's barrier, revealing the desolate world beyond. She also spiritually assists Yuuki Yuuna during a coma, appearing as a crow, and supports Tougou Mimori by bolstering her resolve during a critical decision.
In the spin-off "Churutto!," set in the Divine Era 300, Wakaba participates in the expanded Hero Club with 27 members across timelines. Her activities focus on mundane club endeavors, particularly the development of Hero Club Udon.
Her legacy includes high societal status for the Nogi family, preferential treatment within the Taisha, and her influence on subsequent Heroes. Her experiences as the first Hero leader underscore themes of sacrifice and leadership central to the franchise.
