Description
Descartes Shaman is a character from the animated feature film Mobile Suit Gundam 00 the Movie: A Wakening of the Trailblazer, where he is identified as the second confirmed True Innovator, following Setsuna F. Seiei. His genetic evolution is a direct result of the massive dispersal of GN particles during the Trans-Am Burst that concluded the conflict with the Innovades. Prior to his awakening, he was a soldier who had served with the paramilitary organization A-LAWS, and he holds the rank of captain within the Earth Sphere Federation Forces.

Descartes possesses the powerful quantum brainwaves characteristic of a True Innovator, a trait that Veda itself recognizes. This ability makes him an extraordinarily talented mobile suit pilot, as he can maximize the performance of his machine and control a vast number of remote weapons simultaneously. He is assigned to pilot the GNMA-Y0002V Gadelaza, a massive mobile armor whose firepower and arsenal of GN Fangs are best utilized by a pilot of his unique capabilities.

Despite his official rank, Descartes is deeply discontented. The Earth Sphere Federation military treats him as a valuable research subject rather than as an officer. He is subjected to constant monitoring and human rights violations under the guise of studying his abilities to establish a model case for the expected rise of more Innovators. This treatment has a profound effect on his personality, making him arrogant and egotistical. He fully embraces his status as an Innovator and looks down on ordinary humans, whom he privately refers to as an "inferior species." His cynical and defiant attitude is a direct defense mechanism against being treated as a laboratory specimen for so long.

In the story, Descartes is initially presented as a powerful asset for the Federation, tasked with destroying a falling Jupiter probe. However, his primary narrative role is to be the first human to make contact, and ultimately fail to communicate, with the Extraterrestrial Living-metal Shape-shifters (ELS), the film's alien antagonists. The Federation leadership uses him as bait, hoping his strong quantum brainwaves will lure the ELS for study. Faced with the unknown, Descartes reacts with hostility, launching a preemptive attack on the ELS. He is soon overwhelmed and his mobile armor is assimilated by the aliens. In a horrific sequence, Descartes himself is physically consumed by the ELS from within his cockpit, dying in terror and agony. His fate serves as a dark mirror to the protagonist Setsuna, showcasing the tragic result when an Innovator chooses conflict over understanding.

His key relationships are defined by his isolation and exploitation. He is dismissive of his superiors, but shares a significant moment with Brigadier General Kati Mannequin, who, after witnessing his skills, orders the researchers to finally treat him with the dignity befitting his rank. His most significant, albeit one-sided, connection is with Setsuna F. Seiei. As Descartes is being assimilated, Setsuna reaches out to him via quantum brainwave telepathy, urging him to escape. However, Descartes is already driven mad by the ELS's overwhelming mental presence and can only scream in response.

Descartes Shaman shows little to no positive development, as his arc is a tragic and cautionary one. He is an individual with immense potential who is broken by his mistreatment and his own resulting arrogance. The director of the film has explicitly stated that Descartes was designed as a narrative foil to Setsuna. While Setsuna seeks understanding and connection despite his past as a child soldier, Descartes embodies the shadow side of being an Innovator, allowing feelings of superiority and past trauma to close his heart. His early demise illustrates the films central theme that effective communication is not an automatic power granted by innovation, but a conscious choice.
