Description
Full Frontal is the enigmatic supreme commander of the Neo Zeon remnant faction known as the Sleeves. Operating in the years following the conflict of Char's Counterattack, he is a figure shrouded in deliberate mystique, most famously known by his epithets the Second Coming of Char and the Red Comet Reborn. This reputation is cultivated through his appearance: he wears a mask that obscures his upper face, possesses long blond hair, dons a red uniform, and pilots a custom red mobile suit, the MSN-06S Sinanju. His voice and manner of speaking are also nearly identical to the legendary pilot Char Aznable, a similarity so striking that even seasoned officers who have witnessed archival footage note the uncanny likeness.
However, the truth of his identity is far more complex. Full Frontal is not Char Aznable returned, but a fabricated individual created to serve a specific purpose. He is an artificial Newtype, a clone who was genetically altered to physically resemble the missing Char. His memories and a portion of his will were implanted from the psycho-frame of a mobile suit once piloted by Char, which had absorbed the original's residual consciousness as it drifted through space after the Axis Shock. In essence, Full Frontal views himself, and is understood by others, as a vessel. He carries within him the lingering negative emotions and the deep-seated despair of Char Aznable, who had lost faith in humanity's ability to change despite the miracle that had occurred. He himself states that he is merely a container for the ideals and hopes of the spacenoids, willing to be called Char if that is what people need.
In terms of personality, Full Frontal projects a calm, intelligent, and charismatic demeanor that effectively commands loyalty from his followers. He is a shrewd and manipulative strategist, capable of using diplomacy and psychological warfare as effectively as he uses mobile suit combat. Yet beneath this composed exterior lies a profound nihilism. Having inherited the remnants of Char's soul that were steeped in despair, Full Frontal believes that humanity is incapable of learning from its mistakes and will ultimately destroy itself. His perspective is cold and utilitarian; whereas Char was often driven by personal emotion and a complicated love for humanity, Frontal operates with a detached, almost robotic sense of purpose, showing little of the emotional volatility that characterized his progenitor. This is evident in his treatment of Mineva Zabi, the heir to the Zabi family. Although he pays lip service to her as a princess and figurehead, he holds the old Zabi ideals in contempt and is willing to sacrifice her for his goals. He also displays a clear disdain for the old-guard Zeon soldiers he commands, sending them on dangerous missions without genuine concern.
Full Frontal's primary motivation in the story is to obtain Laplace's Box, a secret that holds the power to overturn the Earth Federation's control over the Universal Century. Unlike those who might use the Box to restart a full-scale war, his plan is more calculated and economically focused. He intends to reveal its contents to force the Federation to cede autonomy to the colonies, creating an economic bloc that would exclude Earth and drastically diminish its power. While he frames this as a path to freedom for Spacenoids, his deeper, more nihilistic goal is to dismantle the existing world order that he believes has condemned humanity to stagnation and self-destruction. His role in the narrative is that of a formidable antagonist, a dark reflection of the past who seeks to drag the future into a cycle of despair, compelling the protagonist Banagher Links to confront the question of whether hope is a meaningful force.
Key relationships define his interactions with others. He is most closely bonded with his loyal adjutant, Angelo Sauper, whom he rescued from a traumatic past. Angelo is fanatically devoted to Frontal, serving as his personal guard and most fervent believer. In contrast, his relationship with Mineva Zabi is one of political necessity and underlying hostility, as he sees her as an obstacle. His dynamic with Banagher Links is central, as Frontal initially attempts to recruit and manipulate the young Newtype, recognizing his potential as the pilot of the Unicorn Gundam. He sees Banagher as another potential vessel, one who might carry humanity forward, but he ultimately becomes his primary adversary in a conflict of ideologies.
Throughout the story, Full Frontal is a force of immense ability. As a pilot, his skills are nearly peerless. Piloting the Sinanju, a mobile suit of extraordinary speed and maneuverability, he demonstrates the ability to single-handedly engage and disable an entire warship and its mobile suit complement. His piloting style, much like the original Red Comet, is aggressive, precise, and awe-inspiring, living up to his legendary reputation.
The development of his character reaches its climax at the end of the conflict. As he continues his final battle against Banagher in the massive mobile armor the Neo Zeong, the intense resonance of psycho-frames allows him to encounter the lingering spiritual forms of Char Aznable and Lalah Sune. In this moment, he is confronted not with the despair he carries, but with the possibility of a future born from hope. This encounter leads to a profound change. He accepts Char's original, more hopeful perspective and effectively allows his spirit to merge back with the original's, entrusting the future to Banagher and the others. In a final act of release, his physical body, now an empty shell, drifts into the void of space, marking the end of the Red Comet's shadow and the final passing of an era.
