TV Special
Description
Goemon Ishikawa XIII is the thirteenth generation in a line of renegade samurai and a descendant of the legendary outlaw Ishikawa Goemon. In the narrative of the 2002 television special Episode 0: First Contact, Goemon is introduced during a period of his life spent in search of the Zantetsuken, a legendary blade of unparalleled sharpness that he believes is the only sword worthy of his skills. This quest brings him into conflict with Arsène Lupin III, Daisuke Jigen, and Fujiko Mine, who initially serve as adversaries, though the circumstances of their shared plight ultimately force them into an uneasy alliance. The events of this story are presented as a potential first meeting for the characters, although the special itself playfully hints that certain details might be embellished or fabricated, leaving the full truth of this first contact ambiguous.

Goemon possesses a deeply reserved and stoic personality, often preferring meditation and silence over participation in the group's banter. He carries an immense and serious pride in his abilities as a master swordsman. As a result, any failure to accomplish a task, such as breaking his sword or being disarmed, fills him with profound shame and remorse, frequently leading him to isolate himself for rigorous training or meditation to overcome his perceived weaknesses. His character is steeped in traditional Japanese culture; he dresses in a hakama, practices both Buddhism and Shinto, strictly prefers Japanese cuisine, and often shows discomfort with or disdain for modern technology, which varies from an inability to drive a car to struggling with a smartphone. Despite his calm exterior, Goemon has notable vulnerabilities, including a particular weakness for women who appear innocent or trustworthy, often leading to trust that is betrayed, and a tendency to become flustered or flee in overtly seductive situations. He is also intensely protective of children and can be easily bribed or lured using Japanese food.

In Episode 0: First Contact, Goemon's motivation is straightforward and singular: to acquire the Zantetsuken. His role in the story evolves from a formidable lone wolf, focused entirely on his personal goal, to a reluctant participant in a larger scheme involving Lupin and the others. This special serves to establish the foundational dynamic where Goemon, though often operating on a different moral and philosophical plane than the thief Lupin, finds his path intersecting and eventually aligning with the gang. Regarding his key relationships, while the special depicts his initial adversarial stance toward Lupin, Jigen, and Fujiko, it lays the groundwork for the future. Over time, his professional relationship with Lupin develops into a deep, if often exasperated, loyalty. He shares a more amicable and mutual bond of respect with Jigen, viewing him as a fellow honorable warrior, while he maintains a cautious and often distrustful view of Fujiko due to her manipulative and duplicitous nature.

Goemon demonstrates little emotional or moral development within the single narrative of Episode 0, as the story focuses on the initial encounter rather than a personal arc. However, the special itself is part of a larger franchise where Goemon consistently evolves from a mercenary or enemy into a loyal, if sometimes reluctant, member of Lupin's team. Later stories show him grappling with crises of honor, questioning his role when he defeats Lupin, or undergoing intense retraining to restore his honor after humiliation.

Goemon is an incredibly gifted martial artist, a lifelong adherent of disciplines including kenjutsu, iaidō, jujutsu, and karate. His most notable ability is his superhuman speed and precision with the Zantetsuken. He is capable of slicing bullets in half mid-flight, deflecting automatic weapon fire, and cutting through virtually any solid substance, including steel, vehicles, and entire buildings. Despite the sword's lethal potential, Goemon adheres to a strict personal code and rarely takes human life, typically using the blade to disarm opponents or destroy weapons and objects, often declaring that he has sliced another worthless thing. Beyond his swordsmanship, his training grants him other extraordinary physical talents, such as exceptional breath control for underwater diving without equipment, the ability to catch projectiles with his bare hands, and a high tolerance for pain and cold. While he prefers to be a passenger, he is also a trained driver and pilot, and like the rest of the gang, he is skilled in the arts of disguise and impersonation.
