Description
Mizuhara Makoto is a seventeen-year-old high school student at Shinonome High School who becomes the protagonist of the story. He is scientifically gifted and builds a complex machine for the school’s cultural festival. When his rival Katsuhiko Jinnai sabotages the device, it triggers a portal that transports Makoto, along with Jinnai, Jinnai’s sister Nanami, and history teacher Masamichi Fujisawa, to the fantastical world of El-Hazard.
Makoto is described as good-hearted, charismatic, sensitive, and courageous. He is noted for being academically excellent and skilled in sports, traits that make him widely liked among his peers and fuel Jinnai’s jealousy. Despite his intelligence, he can be indecisive and lacks self-confidence, especially when dealing with romantic feelings. He is naturally curious and enthusiastic about science, which drives him to investigate the unknown world he finds himself in.
His primary motivation is to protect his friends and the people of El-Hazard, as well as to find a way back home. As events unfold, he becomes deeply invested in the fate of the world’s inhabitants and the conflict between the human nations and the insectoid Bugrom tribe, which is led by Jinnai. He is also driven by a mysterious connection to a woman named Ifurita, who initially appears to him on Earth and sends him to El-Hazard.
Makoto serves as the central hero of El-Hazard: The Magnificent World. Upon arrival, he quickly becomes involved in the political and military struggles of Roshtaria, even forced to masquerade as Princess Fatora to maintain peace among the tribes. His actions eventually lead him to the ancient superweapon known as the Eye of God, and he plays a crucial role in preventing its misuse. Ultimately, he risks his life to stop Ifurita from destroying El-Hazard, causing him to disappear temporarily before later returning.
Key relationships shape his journey. He develops a strong romantic bond with Princess Rune Venus, who becomes his primary love interest in the OVA continuity. He also shares a deep, predestined connection with Ifurita, the demon goddess created by an ancient civilization; his interactions with her form a causal loop that spans ten thousand years. Additionally, the fire priestess Shayla-Shayla and Nanami Jinnai both harbor romantic feelings for him, creating a minor love triangle. His relationship with Jinnai is one of rivalry, though the two are ultimately forced to cooperate in larger conflicts.
Makoto undergoes significant personal development. Initially a reluctant and somewhat passive hero, he grows into a decisive and selfless leader. The central causal loop reveals that his journey was always meant to happen: Ifurita, after being lost in time, waits for him on Earth and sends him back to El-Hazard to trigger the events that will eventually lead to her rescue. This paradox gives his character arc a sense of inevitability and deepens his emotional maturity.
In El-Hazard, Makoto gains a unique ability: he can activate, synchronize with, and intuitively understand ancient El-Hazardian technology simply by touching it. This power allows him to interface with devices such as the Power Key Staff and the Eye of God, and it is key to his ability to communicate with Ifurita on a mental level. He also demonstrates a natural aptitude for diplomacy and problem-solving, using his scientific mind to navigate the world’s challenges.
