Description
Diiva is the enigmatic ruler of the Bugrom, the insectoid race that serves as one of the primary antagonistic forces in the world of El-Hazard. Her most distinctive feature is her external appearance, which, with the exception of a few subtle characteristics, is that of a beautiful and elegant human woman, making her the only fully humanoid member of her entire tribe. This striking form is central to her identity and her interactions with the human characters she encounters.

Her personality is a blend of regal authority, pragmatic ambition, and a surprisingly sincere romantic inclination. Upon first meeting the human strategist Katsuhiko Jinnai, she becomes absolutely convinced that he is a divine messenger sent by God, destined to lead the Bugrom to victory against their enemies in the Alliance. This belief shapes her core motivation: to secure Jinnai as her leader and consort. She is deeply impressed by his tactical abilities to mobilize troops and conquer nations, and this professional admiration quickly develops into a genuine, if highly unusual, romantic interest in him.

In the overarching story, Diiva acts as the commanding force behind the Bugrom, placing her military at Jinnai's disposal. Her role is most prominent in her relationship with him, which creates a comedic and often unsettling dynamic. This relationship takes on a particularly strange family dynamic when it intersects with the reborn, childlike personality of the ancient super-weapon Ifurita, forming an odd trio within Jinnai's faction. In one adaptation, Diiva’s motivations take a more primal turn; after the Bugrom homeland is annihilated, she becomes driven by the need to repopulate her species. To do this, she requires a mate, and she sets her sights on Jinnai as the only suitable male available, much to his horror.

Regarding her development, Diiva remains a relatively static but consistently portrayed background figure in the original story, defined by her devotion to Jinnai and her people. However, an alternate version of the character exists in a parallel world known as Creteria. This Queen, the ruler of the White Bugrom, strongly resembles the primary Diiva but may possess a more carnivorous intent towards Jinnai. Most significantly, this alternate queen reveals a hidden nature: her human-like form is apparently an illusion. When Jinnai flees from her, she transforms into her true state, a giant insectoid creature with a distended abdomen, implying that the beautiful woman he was interacting with was a deceptive lure. This revelation raises pointed questions about the primary Diiva, suggesting that her own perfect human appearance might also be a convincing illusion maintained for Jinnai's benefit.

As for notable abilities, Diiva’s primary power is her commanding presence as the Bugrom Queen. She can issue directives that her entire species follows without question. In her alternate world incarnation, she demonstrates the ability to project a flawless illusory human form. Her reproductive capability is also a central biological function, as she seeks a mate to produce eggs for a new generation of Bugrom when their numbers are critically low. In her true form as the Termite Queen of Creteria, she possesses a large, powerful insectoid body presumably capable of combat and certainly designed for continuous egg-laying.
