Description
Himiko Se is a spiritualist and a major character who serves as the primary human point of view throughout the original Vampire Princess Miyu original video animation. She is an expert in Buddhist magic and protection rituals, which she uses to investigate and combat supernatural threats. Her role in the story is that of an investigator, a detective of the occult who is frequently hired to look into strange occurrences, such as mysterious deaths or disappearances caused by demonic presences. In the first episode, she travels to Kyoto during a heatwave to investigate why a young girl named Aiko has fallen into a comatose state, a case that brings her into conflict and a reluctant alliance with the vampire princess Miyu.

Throughout the narrative, Himiko acts as a foil to Miyu, representing humanity's suspicion and fear of the unknown. While she is dedicated to protecting humans from the shinma, god-devils who prey on them, she is deeply wary of Miyu, initially suspecting the vampire of being the true culprit behind a series of murders. Her motivations are rooted in a desire to understand the supernatural and to safeguard people, yet she is forced to confront the moral ambiguity of Miyu’s existence. Himiko struggles to reconcile the fact that a vampire, a creature that must drink human blood to survive, is also the guardian who hunts and destroys greater evils. She eventually comes to accept that being a vampire does not inherently make one evil, a significant shift in her worldview.

Her key relationships are defined by her persistent yet cautious interaction with Miyu and the silent guardian Larva. Over the course of their encounters, a complex bond forms between the spiritualist and the vampire. In the episodes "Unearthly Kyoto," "A Banquet of Marionettes," and "Fragile Armor," Himiko finds herself repeatedly crossing paths with Miyu, often needing the vampire's intervention to survive, even as she attempts to maintain her distrust. The nature of their connection is ultimately revealed to be much deeper than simple circumstance. In the final episode, "Frozen Time," Himiko experiences a revelation about her own childhood. She recalls that as a five-year-old child, she wandered into Miyu’s abandoned home, where she met the vampire. It is then revealed that Miyu drank Himiko’s blood during this encounter, creating a permanent bond between them. This revelation explains why she is so intrinsically linked to Miyu's destiny and suggests that she may one day develop vampiric powers herself.

Himiko's notable abilities are rooted in her knowledge of spiritualism and Buddhist magic. She is capable of performing protection rituals and casting spells that can hold supernatural creatures at bay, such as keeping an animated suit of armor, controlled by the shinma Lemures, from attacking. While her powers are effective against lesser spiritual threats, she is often outmatched by the more powerful shinma she hunts, forcing her to rely on Miyu to resolve the most dangerous situations. Over the course of the series, her role evolves from an active hunter of spirits to a witness of a larger, more tragic cosmic cycle, finally understanding that her destiny has been intertwined with the vampire princess since childhood.
