OVA
Description
Larva is a shinma, a demonic being from the western world, who serves as the companion and protector of the vampire guardian Miyu in the series Vampire Princess Miyu. His name is derived from the Roman mythological term "larvae," meaning malevolent spirits. Originally, Larva was sent to Japan with the mission of killing Miyu before her vampire powers could fully awaken. In the original video animation, he hesitated out of pity for the young girl, and his touch inadvertently triggered her awakening. Miyu drank his blood and forced him to replace it with her own, binding him to her as an eternal servant. In the television series, the two first met after Miyu had already become the guardian; they fought, and once their blood mingled, Larva glimpsed her sorrow and pledged to follow her.
Larva is a tall figure with short bluish hair and red eyes, often clad in a cloak and wearing a volto-style mask. In the OVA, he is unable to speak and never removes his mask, while in the TV series he can speak and occasionally shows his face. His personality is quiet, stoic, and fiercely loyal. He rarely displays emotion but is driven by a deep, unspoken bond with Miyu, believing that after all stray shinma are returned to the darkness, the two of them will be able to return there together. His motivations stem from this shared fate and the sorrow he sensed within Miyu, which compelled him to stay by her side.
In the story, Larva functions as Miyu's primary ally and protector. He accompanies her everywhere, helping to hunt and defeat shinma that have strayed into the human world. He is extremely powerful, often defeating enemies without sustaining serious injury. In the TV series, he fights using sharp, extending nails and a scythe. Over the course of the narrative, Larva develops from a would-be assassin into a devoted companion who willingly sacrifices for Miyu’s mission. His key relationship is with Miyu herself, but in the manga he also has ties to other western shinma such as Lemures and Carlua, who attempt to rescue him from his servitude. Despite these external pressures, Larva remains unwavering in his commitment to Miyu, and his character arc emphasizes themes of redemption, duty, and the melancholy of eternal existence.
