Description
Alex Rosewater is the chairman of the Paradigm Corporation, the ruling organization that controls all aspects of life in Paradigm City. As the official son of the city's founder, Gordon Rosewater, he wields near-absolute power over the domed metropolis, believing its true citizens to be only the affluent class who live within the inner domes, and he holds deep contempt for the poor and any foreigners living outside them. In his early forties, specifically 43 years old, Rosewater presents a distinctive appearance, always wearing a white suit with a red shirt and no necktie, a stark visual contrast to the protagonist Roger Smith's black attire.
His personality is defined by a ruthless, ends-justify-the-means philosophy combined with a self-centered and childish nature. He is冷酷非道, capable of casually ordering the deaths of others for the sake of his company's interests, yet he also behaves like a spoiled child, referring to his father as Papa and referring to himself with the pronoun boku, which is typically used by young boys. This juvenile side is most visibly displayed when he plays with a miniature, remote-controlled toy version of the megadeus Big Fau, treating the actual giant robot as his personal plaything. Despite already being the de facto absolute ruler of Paradigm City, Rosewater possesses an unquenchable thirst for even greater power, dreaming of becoming a god and creating a new world while destroying everyone who does not meet his standards.
Rosewater's primary motivation is the acquisition and control of memory and the power of the megadei, specifically the Big type. He believes that the pilots of these machines are agents of the power of God, and he desires to be the one to wield that authority. As the series progresses into its second season, he develops a pronounced messianic complex, seeing himself as the only one fit to save the world and become its true ruler. He seeks to eliminate memories permanently, using his authority to have individuals who carry memories from before the Event, known derisively as tomatoes, killed before they can ripen, as he believes his role is to purge those in pain.
In the story, Rosewater serves as the primary antagonist and final adversary for Roger Smith. His role is fundamentally that of the villain who wishes to usurp control of the city's very reality, believing that Paradigm does not need two gods and that someone other than himself is acting in that role. His key relationships are defined by power and utility. He has a complex and ultimately murderous relationship with his father, Gordon Rosewater. Upon hearing that his father loves both his son and daughter, Rosewater leaves him with the words I love Papa before attempting to kill him by setting his house on fire. He holds a deep-seated hatred and rivalry with Roger Smith, not only because Roger pilots Big O but because Rosewater perceives Roger as a rival god in what he considers his city, and he envies Roger's status as a true Dominus or chosen pilot.
Alex Rosewater's character undergoes significant development, primarily manifesting as a progressive mental and physical degradation. After reconstructing Big Fau and attempting to pilot it, his mental state deteriorates much like the previous antagonist Schwarzwald after contact with Big Duo. He becomes increasingly erratic, and his messianic complex intensifies to the point of delusion. A crucial revelation is that he is not actually Gordon Rosewater's biological son but rather one of his artificial children, a tomato himself, which he denies upon remembering. Physically, his descent culminates in his battle with Roger, where Big Fau begins to take control of him, inserting cables into his back to siphon his life force and forcibly fuse with him, indicating that he was never the true pilot but was instead being consumed by the megadeus.
Rosewater's notable abilities are tied to his position and his piloting of Big Fau. As chairman of the Paradigm Corporation, he commands immense resources, including the military police and the ability to deploy R.D. units to eliminate targets. He demonstrates enough technical or intuitive skill to reconstruct and pilot the megadeus Big Fau, although he is initially rejected by the machine, which displays the message Ye Not. He manages to force the megadeus to operate properly only by rigging its control system with the memory core of the android Dorothy Wayneright. In the final battle, Big Fau accepts him not as a true Dominus but as a power source, turning him into a component of the machine itself. His ultimate fate is to be erased from existence by the colossal entity Big Venus after half of Big Fau is destroyed by Big O's Final Stage weapon.
