Description
Alexander Kurenai, known in the original Japanese version as Sanshiro Kurenai, is the teenage protagonist of the 1969 anime series Judo Boy. He is a dedicated practitioner of the Kurenai school of jujitsu, a martial arts style founded by his father. His appearance and demeanor are typical of a wandering martial artist of his era, driven by a singular, consuming purpose.

The foundation of Alexander Kurenai's character is built upon tragedy and a subsequent quest for vengeance. The series begins with the death of his father at the hands of a mysterious, powerful rival. Arriving too late to prevent the murder, Alexander finds only two things: his father dying in his arms and a single clue left behind by the assailant—a glass eye. This clue suggests that his father's killer is a one-eyed man, and it becomes the central focus of Alexander's life. This event shatters his world, as he had always believed his father to be invincible, and he initially experiences a deep crisis of faith in his martial art and himself.

His primary motivation is the pursuit of this one-eyed man to avenge his father and restore the honor of his family's school. This desire for revenge is the engine that drives him forward, transforming his initial grief and doubt into an unwavering, almost obsessive determination. He travels the country on his motorcycle, a symbol of his solitary and relentless journey, following any lead that might bring him closer to his target.

Throughout his journey, Alexander is never truly alone. He is accompanied by two loyal companions: Kenbo, an orphaned young boy who looks up to him, and Boke, Kenbo's pet dog. This small group forms a surrogate family, providing moments of lightness and camaraderie in contrast to Alexander's serious mission. While Kenbo and Boke offer unwavering support and admiration, Alexander's relationships are often fleeting. In many episodes, he encounters a young woman in distress, whom he helps and who subsequently falls in love with him. However, his quest is all-consuming, and these potential romances are always left behind as he continues his search.

The series serves as a significant journey of development for Alexander. While his stated goal is to find and defeat his father's killer, the narrative places greater emphasis on his personal growth. He begins as a young man whose martial arts skill is fueled by anger and a desire for revenge. Over the course of 26 episodes, he faces numerous opponents, many of whom are one-eyed or wear an eyepatch, forcing him to constantly test and refine his abilities. Each fight is a lesson, teaching him not just new techniques but also about patience, focus, and the true spirit of judo. The series suggests that his real enemy is not the elusive one-eyed man, but his own inner turmoil and immature approach to martial arts. The story concludes without him ever finding his father's killer, a decision that underscores the theme that the journey and self-discovery were the true purpose, leaving him to continue his quest indefinitely.

As a martial artist, Alexander Kurenai is highly skilled in the techniques of his school. His notable abilities are rooted in traditional jujitsu and judo, employing throws, holds, and strikes to subdue his opponents. His training is rigorous, and his combat style reflects a constant evolution as he learns from each new adversary he faces. The search for his father's killer is the crucible in which his skills are repeatedly tested and honed, making him a formidable and ever-improving fighter.
