Description
Sanshiro Kurenai, known as Judo Boy, is the teenage protagonist of the series and a practitioner of the Kurenai School of jujitsu. He is the son of the school's founder, who is killed in a duel with a mysterious, invincible opponent at the very beginning of the story. Sanshiro arrives too late to save his father, but finds the only clue to the killer's identity: a glass eye left at the scene, leading him to believe his father's murderer is a one-eyed man.

Driven by a powerful and consuming desire for revenge, Sanshiro is a determined and impulsive young man with a strong, fiery temper. His quest to find the one-eyed man and avenge his father is his primary obsession, giving him the strength to overcome his initial despair and set out on his journey. Despite his obsession, he possesses an innate and strong sense of justice, often stopping to help young women in distress during his travels. He is also deeply loyal to his friends and believes strongly in the values of friendship.

Sanshiro's role in the story is that of a wandering avenger. He travels the world on his red motorcycle, getting involved in the problems of the towns and villages he passes through. Each episode typically follows a formula where he arrives in a new location, encounters a girl in trouble, and ultimately fights and defeats a local villain, many of whom are one-eyed or wear an eyepatch. He is accompanied in his travels by two constant companions: Kenbo, an orphaned boy who acts as his sidekick, and Kenbo's pet dog, Boke, who provides moments of comic relief.

Throughout his journey, Sanshiro undergoes a significant personal development. Early in the series, he is often told that his fighting spirit is hollow and that he lacks patience and concentration because he is blinded by rage and vengeance. Over the course of the 26 episodes, he matures through his encounters with various people, including a young boy also seeking revenge, which forces him to reflect on his own motivations. By the series' open-ended conclusion, Sanshiro has not found his father's killer. However, he has grown to understand that the Kurenai style is not for murder, and his goal shifts from simple vengeance to seeking a fair and honorable fight as a worthy opponent, deciding to continue training to become the greatest judo fighter in the world.

Sanshiro's notable abilities are rooted in his mastery of the Kurenai School of jujitsu, though the series is commonly known as Judo Boy. His skills are formidable enough to defeat numerous powerful opponents. His most iconic ability is tied to his red judo kimono, which was sewn for him by his late mother. When he puts on this red kimono for a final fight, often after a ritualized dressing scene, he becomes nearly invincible. He is also frequently seen riding his red motorcycle, which serves as his primary mode of transport.
