Description
Garoto, whose original Japanese name is Sanshiro Kurenai, is the protagonist of the anime series. He is a teenage martial artist who becomes the heir to the Kurenai school of jujitsu following the death of his father, the school's founder. His life is forever changed at the beginning of the story when he arrives too late to save his father, who has been mortally wounded by a mysterious and overwhelmingly powerful opponent. The only clue left behind at the scene of the crime is a glass eye, leading Sanshiro to believe his father's killer is a man with only one eye.
In terms of personality, Sanshiro is defined by a potent mix of youthful impulsiveness and a deep, unyielding sense of justice. He is initially consumed by grief and a burning desire for revenge, which makes him rash and obsessed. When he first begins his quest, his technique is described as being empty, lacking true fighting spirit because his actions are clouded by anger and impatience. Other characters frequently advise him that his thirst for vengeance will lead to defeat and that he lacks the necessary patience and concentration of a true martial artist. Despite this, he possesses a strong moral compass that compels him to intervene whenever he sees innocent people, especially young women, being terrorized or oppressed. This often leads him to temporarily set aside his main mission to help those in need.
Sanshiros primary motivation is to track down the one-eyed man who killed his father and avenge him, thereby restoring the honor of the Kurenai school. This quest for revenge is the engine that drives him to travel the world on his red motorcycle. It is an obsessive mission that consumes almost all of his thoughts, preventing him from forming lasting romantic attachments or settling down. However, as his journey progresses, his motivations gradually mature. The raw desire for vengeance evolves into a search for a fair and honorable duel, and a personal goal to become the greatest judo fighter in the world. His journey is not just about finding his fathers killer, but also about finding and mastering himself.
In the story, Sanshiro serves as a classic wandering hero. The narrative is episodic; he arrives in a new town or country, encounters a local injustice or a villain, gets involved, and eventually defeats the antagonist in a final judo match before departing on his motorcycle to continue his search. The series never resolves its central mystery; Sanshiro never finds his father's killer, and the story concludes with an open ending where he continues his search, having grown wiser from his experiences.
His key relationships are with his two loyal companions, Ken and Bobo. Ken is a young, energetic orphaned shoe-shine boy who looks up to Sanshiro as a hero and older brother figure. Bobo is Kens pet dachshund who often wears a cap and provides comedic relief. The two of them accompany Sanshiro on his travels, and Ken often plays a supporting role, such as throwing Sanshiro his red kimono before a fight. Throughout his journey, Sanshiro also regularly encounters a series of young women in distress. While he shows them kindness and affection, and they often fall in love with him, he never stays with them, as his mission always takes priority.
Sanshiro undergoes a significant development arc. He begins as a grief-stricken and vengeance-driven boy but matures into a more introspective and disciplined warrior. Through his many battles and the advice of the people he meets, he learns that physical strength alone is insufficient. He is taught the importance of patience, strategy, and mental concentration. A pivotal moment comes in an episode where he meets a boy consumed by revenge against a one-eyed tiger, which forces Sanshiro to confront his own all-consuming hatred. By the end of the series, his sole aim is no longer revenge but a fair fight and personal mastery, signaling his inner growth as a martial artist and as a person.
Sanshiros notable abilities center on his prowess in judo and other martial arts. While known as a judo boy, he is also proficient in jujitsu and uses striking techniques, including a powerful hand chop (shuto) that often ends a fight. His most iconic ritual involves donning a distinctive red judo kimono before a major battle. This kimono, which was sewn for him by his late mother, is thrown to him by Ken. The act of putting it on seems to grant him exceptional focus and strength, transforming him into a more formidable fighter. The ritual is always accompanied by the visual detail of his shoes and socks disappearing, leaving him barefoot. He also rides a red motorcycle that allows him to travel the world, often performing incredible feats of acrobatics on it. His fighting style also shows the ability to improvise and create new techniques in the midst of a life-or-death struggle.
