Description
Professor Souichi Tomoe, commonly known as Professor Tomoe, is a central antagonist in the anime season Sailor Moon S. He is a celebrated scientist by profession and the founder and owner of Mugen Academy, an elite school that serves as a cover for the activities of the Death Busters, the villainous organization he leads. He is also the father of Hotaru Tomoe and the widowed husband of Keiko Tomoe.
His background is defined by personal tragedy. Before the events of the series, an accident in his laboratory, connected to a freak storm and fire, killed his wife and left his young daughter Hotaru critically injured. In the anime continuity, the alien entity Germatoid exploited his grief and forcefully possessed him around the same time that Hotaru became the host for Mistress 9. Under this possession, Tomoe became the public face of the Death Busters, directing their operations, supplying them with his scientific expertise and resources, and building Mugen Academy as their base.
In terms of personality, the possessed Tomoe is theatrical and eccentric, displaying bizarre and exaggerated mannerisms that make him an unexpected source of mild humor. It is never specified whether these traits belong to Germatoid or are repressed aspects of his own character, since little is shown of his life before the possession. He is, however, an unusually lenient leader, often making casual conversation with his subordinates, such as the Witches 5, and expressing disappointment rather than threatening punishment when they fail. On certain occasions his true personality emerges, revealing a gentle and devoted father beneath the alien influence.
His motivations are tied to the Death Busters' goal of gathering human souls to revive Mistress 9 and summon Pharaoh 90, an entity intended to reshape the Earth for their kind. On a personal level, his downfall is rooted in desperation to save his daughter, as his cooperation with the Death Busters follows directly from the disaster that shattered his family.
His role in the story is largely that of a behind-the-scenes commander. He oversees Kaolinite and the Witches 5, manages the academy, and supervises experiments involving Daimons. During the climactic confrontation, Germatoid separates from his body and is destroyed by Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune, leaving Tomoe alive but with no memory of his actions as a villain. He ends the season hospitalized in a wheelchair, quietly devoted to raising Hotaru, who has been reborn as an infant. He appears one final time in the opening episode of the following season, when Sailor Pluto arrives to take the baby Hotaru into her care, and by that point his health has visibly improved, as he no longer requires the wheelchair. He is not seen again after that.
His most significant relationship is with Hotaru; even while possessed, traces of his care for her remain, and once freed from Germatoid he dedicates himself entirely to her wellbeing. His relationship with Kaolinite, his former assistant, is marked by her deep loyalty; in the anime, she attempts to win his affection by stealing a pure heart for Mistress 9, only to be destroyed by Mistress 9 afterward. With the Witches 5 he maintains an uncommonly tolerant dynamic, speaking with them as colleagues rather than as disposable servants.
In terms of abilities, Tomoe does not fight personally. His strengths lie in his scientific genius, his strategic control over the Death Busters, and his capacity to create and deploy Daimons through his laboratory work at Mugen Academy. Any supernatural power he displays during the season stems from his possession by Germatoid, which is portrayed in the anime as a separate alien life-force rather than a transformation of his own body.
