Description
Michiru Kaioh, known in her transformed state as Sailor Neptune, is introduced in the third story arc of the anime, which corresponds to the season Sailor Moon S. She is a teenage Japanese schoolgirl and a highly accomplished violinist, already recognized internationally for her musical talent by the time of her first appearance. Her civilian identity is that of a mature, calm, and reserved young woman who does not readily reveal her thoughts. She attends Mugen Academy alongside Haruka Tenoh and later Hotaru Tomoe.

Michiru is the reincarnation of an ancient warrior from the Silver Millennium, the Sailor Guardian of the planet Neptune. She awakens to her powers and memories independently, without the aid of the moon cats, and takes on the duty of protecting the Solar System from external threats, a mission she shares with her partner and lover, Haruka Tenoh, who transforms into Sailor Uranus. Together they form a key part of the Outer Solar System Guardians.

Her personality is marked by elegance, sophistication, and a calm demeanor, yet she is capable of sharp anger and even cold ruthlessness when her sense of duty is challenged. She dislikes being patronized and will not indulge others out of politeness, remaining congenial but not especially social. Her creator described her as hiding a kindness as vast as the sea beneath a reserved exterior. She is deeply artistic, with her strongest passion being the violin, but she also excels at swimming and painting. Her motivations are driven by a black-and-white sense of justice: she believes that sacrifices must be made to protect the greater good, and she is fully dedicated to her mission, willing to act alone or in secret if necessary. This occasionally puts her at odds with the Inner Guardians, who favor mercy and cooperation.

In the story of Sailor Moon S, Michiru and Haruka initially operate independently, investigating the Death Busters and seeking the three Talismans that will summon Sailor Saturn. Michiru serves as a cool, calculating strategist, often using her precognitive abilities to sense danger and predict the next target. She carries the Deep Aqua Mirror, one of the three Talismans, which reveals the truth and can also be used offensively to project energy or create shields. Her role evolves as she and Haruka eventually ally with Sailor Moon and the Inner Guardians, though their relationship remains cautious until the true nature of the threat becomes clear.

The most significant relationship in Michiru's life is with Haruka Tenoh. They are partners in every sense—fighting side by side, living together, and sharing a romantic bond that is explicitly portrayed as a lesbian relationship. Their dynamic is complementary: Haruka is more masculine and impulsive, while Michiru is feminine and composed, but both are equally committed to their mission. Michiru also develops a protective, maternal instinct toward Hotaru Tomoe, whom she and Haruka take in after the events of the Infinity arc. Her interactions with the Inner Guardians, particularly Usagi Tsukino, are marked by a gradual respect, though she remains more distant and pragmatic.

Throughout Sailor Moon S and her subsequent appearances, Michiru undergoes little overt personality change, but her development is seen in her willingness to trust others and to balance her harsh sense of duty with compassion. In the final season, she and Haruka face the ultimate sacrifice, and she demonstrates her unwavering resolve.

As a Sailor Guardian, Michiru possesses powers tied to the ocean and deep waters. Even as a civilian, she exhibits precognitive intuition, occasionally remarking that the sea feels turbulent when evil is near. When transformed, she can generate, manipulate, and shape seawater, use sonar-based attacks with her violin, and employ her Deep Aqua Mirror to reveal hidden truths or create defensive barriers. Her primary attack is Deep Submerge, a powerful water-based assault. Later, she gains the ability to achieve Super Sailor Neptune, which enhances her powers and changes her uniform. She is also one of the few guardians with strong psychic abilities, alongside Sailor Mars. Her transformation phrase is Neptune Planet Power, Make Up, and later Neptune Crystal Power.

In summary, Michiru Kaioh is a complex character defined by her grace, intellect, and unwavering dedication to her role as Sailor Neptune. Her artistic talents, her romantic partnership with Haruka, and her willingness to make hard choices make her a pivotal figure in the Sailor Moon mythos.
