Description
Hotaru Tomoe is the human identity of Sailor Saturn, a Sailor Guardian whose powers are intrinsically linked to destruction, silence, and rebirth. She is first introduced as a frail and solitary middle school student whose life is overshadowed by a tragic accident and a mysterious illness.

Born on January 6, Hotaru is a Capricorn with AB blood type. Before the events of the story, a catastrophic explosion at her father's laboratory claimed her mother's life and left Hotaru herself on the verge of death. To save her, her father, Professor Souichi Tomoe, made a desperate pact with an extraterrestrial entity from the Tau star system. This led to Hotaru's body becoming the host for Mistress 9, a powerful and malevolent being, while her father was possessed by another entity named Germatoid.

As a result of this possession, Hotaru lives a deeply isolated existence. Her health is extremely fragile, and she suffers from strange seizures and involuntary bursts of supernatural energy that frighten her classmates and schoolmates at Mugen Academy, making her an outcast. Her creator, Naoko Takeuchi, describes her as delicate, quiet, precocious, and sometimes appearing expressionless. Despite her somber circumstances, her true personality is that of a logical, polite, and deeply kind girl who loves to read, collect decorative lamps, and dreams of becoming a nurse to help heal others.

Her life changes dramatically when she meets Chibiusa, the young daughter of Sailor Moon. Chibiusa is the first person to see past Hotaru's frightening exterior, and they form a profound and beautiful friendship. Through this connection, Hotaru begins to open up, finding joy and warmth she had never known. However, the Outer Sailor Guardians, Sailor Uranus, Sailor Neptune, and Sailor Pluto, recognize the immense danger within Hotaru. They are aware that she is the reincarnation of Sailor Saturn, a guardian who once destroyed the remnants of the ancient Silver Millennium. Fearing that her awakening would inevitably lead to the end of the world, they initially believe they must kill her before her powers can manifest.

As the threat from the Death Busters grows, Mistress 9 eventually takes full control of Hotaru's body. But Hotaru's love for her father and her friendship with Chibiusa give her the strength to fight from within. She manages to expel Mistress 9 and fully awakens as Sailor Saturn, the Guardian of Destruction and Rebirth. Manifesting her signature weapon, the Silence Glaive, she confronts the alien mastermind Pharaoh 90. While Sailor Saturn has the power to destroy a planet with a single swing of her glaive, her role is not one of simple annihilation but of clearing the way for new life. In a final act, she uses her power to help defeat the ultimate enemy, sacrificing her own existence in the process.

Following this sacrifice, Hotaru is reborn as a normal, healthy infant, free from all cybernetic parts or demonic possessions she had before. She is then adopted by her former would-be executioners, Haruka Tenoh (Sailor Uranus), Michiru Kaioh (Sailor Neptune), and Setsuna Meioh (Sailor Pluto). In her new life, she is much happier and more expressive, affectionately calling Haruka her father and Michiru and Setsuna her mothers. Even as a child, she demonstrates the ability to rapidly grow back to her proper age when danger threatens again, once more taking up the role of Sailor Saturn to protect those she loves.

As Sailor Saturn, her notable abilities extend beyond pure destruction. She can erect powerful defensive barriers known as the Silence Wall and has a natural talent for healing minor wounds, a skill she practices even in her civilian form. Her ultimate techniques, such as Death Reborn Revolution, channel the profound power of death that enables a new cycle of rebirth to begin. Through this journey, Hotaru transforms from a tragic, isolated figure into a beloved Guardian who embodies the necessary end that makes every new beginning possible.
