Description
Germatoid is a major antagonist from the third season of the Sailor Moon anime, Sailor Moon S, and serves as the hidden leader of the Death Busters. His true nature is that of a powerful, plant-like Daimon, a monster species typically created to serve the organization's goals, but he is unique as the only member of his kind to hold a command position and play a central role in the season's overarching plot.
The character's background is rooted in tragedy and deception. Before the events of the series, a catastrophic laboratory explosion gravely injured the brilliant scientist Professor Souichi Tomoe and his young daughter, Hotaru. In the aftermath, Germatoid, who had recently arrived on Earth from the Tau Star System, appeared before the grieving professor. He offered to save both their lives, but the price was possession. Germatoid took over Professor Tomoe's body, integrating himself through the professor's right eye, and used him as a host. Simultaneously, he selected the critically injured Hotaru to become the future vessel for Mistress 9, a powerful entity known as the Messiah of Silence.
Under the guise of the eccentric Professor Tomoe, Germatoid became the charismatic and seemingly benevolent public face of the Death Busters. His primary motivation was to orchestrate the revival of Mistress 9 and, ultimately, to summon his master, the cosmic entity Pharaoh 90, to Earth. To achieve this, he established Mugen Academy as a front and commanded a team of minions including Kaolinite and the Witches Five to extract Pure Heart Crystals from human targets. These crystals were necessary to locate three special items called Talismans, which would in turn reveal the Holy Grail, a key artifact needed to complete his masters revival. Throughout this time, Hotaru was kept close, her body slowly being prepared for possession by Mistress 9, a process that left her frail and perpetually ill. Germatoid showed no genuine paternal affection for Hotaru, viewing her solely as a necessary component in his plan.
In his false identity, Germatoid was a patient and even-tempered supervisor to his subordinates, often forgiving their failures rather than punishing them, which made him an effective leader. However, this affable personality was a complete fabrication. In truth, he was a ruthless and single-minded being, willing to sacrifice countless lives and manipulate a young girl to accomplish his goals. He displayed a calm, mocking demeanor when confronting his enemies, showing clear enjoyment in his villainy and confidence in his schemes.
Germatoids role in the story shifts from manipulator to direct combatant in the final arc. As the Sailor Guardians, particularly the Outer Senshi Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune, close in on the truth, Mistress 9 fully awakens within Hotaru and orders him to eliminate the intruders. At this point, Germatoid abandons his host body, finally revealing his true form a gigantic, monstrous entity whose shadowed face and single right eye mirror those of the professor he had possessed. He proved to be exceptionally resilient; after Sailor Uranus scattered his initial form with her World Shaking attack, his essence survived and transferred into several smaller, rubbery, humanoid bodies. These clones multiplied, proving impervious to standard attacks. However, Sailor Neptune used the Deep Aqua Mirror, one of the legendary Talismans, to immobilize the clones and render them transparent, exposing the one body that contained Germatoids true core. Sailor Uranus then destroyed him permanently by stabbing him in the face with the Space Sword, shattering his Daimon egg.
Germatoids destruction was the key event that freed Professor Tomoe from his long possession, leaving behind the man's empty shell as Mistress 9 cruelly noted. Regarding notable abilities, Germatoid was defined by his parasitic nature, allowing him to completely inhabit and control a human host. In his true form, he possessed immense durability and the ability to divide his consciousness across multiple duplicate bodies, making him extremely difficult to destroy. Inside his artificial, human-sized forms, he could stretch his limbs like vines to ensnare his opponents. However, his ultimate weakness was the concentration of his life force into a single core within one of his clones, a vulnerability that could be exposed by powerful magic.
