Description
Haruka Tenou is the civilian identity of Sailor Uranus, a Sailor Guardian who first appears during the events of Sailor Moon S. She is a tall, older teenage girl with short pale blond hair and dark blue eyes, standing approximately 175 centimeters or five feet nine inches tall. Haruka presents herself with a notable gender fluidity, frequently wearing both masculine and feminine clothing and often being mistaken for a boy upon first meeting, including by the main protagonist Usagi Tsukino. When attending Mugen Academy, the elite school she and Michiru infiltrate, she wears the male uniform, further adding to this initial confusion.
Despite her young age of sixteen, Haruka is already an accomplished and professional race car driver, a career she pursued as her greatest dream before awakening as a Sailor Guardian. She is also a skilled runner and athlete, belonging to her school's track-and-field club. Haruka lives a wealthy lifestyle alongside her partner Michiru Kaiou, with her financial means never fully explained, though she mentions in the manga having wealthy patrons.
In terms of personality, Haruka is characterized as stubborn, strong-willed, and fiercely protective. She is also charming, flirtatious, and enjoys teasing pretty girls, including Usagi, whom she affectionately nicknames Odango or dumpling. Despite her flirtatious exterior, she is highly private about her personal life and becomes flustered when others tease her in return. Haruka is direct, sincere, and can be perceived as standoffish or cold, particularly toward those she does not yet trust. She dislikes being interrogated and hates natto, a fermented soybean dish, as well as modern Japanese class and popular men. Her impulsiveness and willingness to act quickly sometimes contrast with a more thoughtful approach, but she possesses a strong will and is not easily deterred once she commits to a course of action.
Haruka's motivations are rooted in her role as an Outer Sailor Guardian, whose duty is to protect the Solar System from external threats originating from space. Alongside Sailor Neptune, her primary mission during Sailor Moon S is to locate the three Talismans before the Death Busters can find them, in order to prevent the coming of the Silence, a catastrophic disaster that would destroy the world. She is willing to sacrifice anything for this mission, including innocent lives or even her own partner, believing that the greater good justifies extreme measures. This pragmatic and ruthless approach puts her at odds with Sailor Moon, who refuses to sacrifice anyone. Haruka initially distrusts Sailor Moon and her fellow Inner Guardians, but over time, she comes to respect Sailor Moon as her princess and believes in her strength more than anyone, according to Michiru.
Her role in the story is that of an antihero and rival to the Inner Senshi, operating independently and on her own terms. She is one of the four Outer Senshi, alongside Sailor Neptune, Sailor Pluto, and later Sailor Saturn, who serve as the first line of defense against invaders from beyond the solar system. Haruka is defined by her partnership with Michiru Kaiou, who is both her lover and her fellow Guardian Sailor Neptune. Their romantic relationship is explicitly portrayed in both the original Japanese anime and manga, with the anime depiction including hand-holding, flirting, and clear romantic affection without being fetishized. The English dub controversially changed their relationship to cousins to avoid the topic of homosexuality. Beyond her relationship with Michiru, Haruka is close friends with Setsuna Meioh, Sailor Pluto, as the three Outer Senshi work closely together. Following the destruction of the Death Busters and the rebirth of Sailor Saturn as an infant Hotaru, Haruka, Michiru, and Setsuna vow to become her new family, with Hotaru affectionately calling Haruka Papa.
Throughout the series, Haruka undergoes development from a distrustful and aloof figure who questions Sailor Moon's worthiness into a loyal ally who respects the princess and works alongside the other Guardians. Her cold exterior softens as bonds form, particularly with Usagi and the other Inner Senshi, though her core pragmatism and willingness to make difficult sacrifices remain central to her character. In the final battle against Sailor Galaxia, Haruka and Michiru pretend to betray the other Guardians in a failed attempt to defeat the enemy from within, resulting in their deaths before being revived at the story's conclusion.
As a Sailor Guardian, Haruka possesses a range of notable abilities. She transforms using the phrase Uranus Planet Power, Make Up. Her primary attack is World Shaking, where she gathers energy from the sky and sends a powerful blast toward her enemies by slamming the energy against the ground. She wields the Space Sword, one of the three Talismans, which allows her to perform Space Sword Blaster, firing sword-shaped energy waves. In the manga, she also uses Space Turbulence, warping space around her hands to release waves of electromagnetic energy. Her powers are associated with the wind, sky, and air, and she is described as the Sailor of the Air or the Soldier of the Heavens. She possesses precognitive abilities, often receiving dreams or hearing warnings in the wind, shared with Michiru and Setsuna. Her physical capabilities are exceptional, including superhuman strength, speed, and agility, as well as proficiency in hand-to-hand combat and swordsmanship. She can also fly, survive in outer space, and, when under Sailor Galaxia's control, remove Star Seeds. Later upgrades in the manga grant her Super Sailor Uranus and Eternal Sailor Uranus forms, significantly increasing her power.
